0.33 l bottle from ’Vormann Brauerei’, best before December 2017. Black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, some licorice and hints of dark fruits. Moderately sweet, malty, quite roasty taste of dark chocolate, licorice, lots of coffee and traces of dark fruits, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy-dry finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. The best of the three versions I’ve had in my opinion. Didn’t dig the chili version, but the coffee adds some earthiness and complexity to the regular one.

0.33 l bottle from ’Vormann Brauerei’, best before February 2018. Dark brown to black with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of toasted nuts, milk chocolate, some vanilla and hints of coffee. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty taste of milk chocolate, coffee, toasted nuts and a touch of vanilla, followed by a medium long, slightly roasty-bitter, a bit earthy and rather peppery-hot finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Tastes exactly the same as the regular version, just with a long chili burn in the finish. That’s why I like the regular version better.

Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty aroma of milk chocolate, some coffee and hints of hazelnut. Quite sweet, malty, moderately roasty taste of milk chocolate, coffee, some hazelnut and hints of licorice, followed by a medium long, rather roasty-bitter, earthy-dry finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very decent Porter!

Tap. Hazy amber color with eggshell head. Aroma is tropical fruits, a bit buttery. Taste is tropical fruits, grapefruit, pale malts. Medium carbonation. Okay, but by far not Pirate’s best beer.

Tap at BKL2017. Black, brown lace. Spicy chili roasted nose. Lightly oxidized but very fresh coffee/espresso. Medium light body, a tad weak in the finish. Lebkuchen retronasal.

Black with medium brown head. Aroma is coffee, leaves, some roast. Taste is sour with some coffee bitterness. Medium smoothness. Ok.

Black with medium brown head. Aroma is leaves, coffee, peppers. Taste is bitter coffee on the tongue, lots of chili spice later. Nice.

Tap. Dark brown color with beige head. Aroma is vegetal, chocolate, touch of chili flesh. Taste is slightly hot chili, chocolate, and a touch of coffee. Silky mouthfeel, spicy aftertaste. Nice, the hotness is very balanced, but the aroma is a bit vegetal.

Tap. Dark brown color with beige head. Aroma is fresh coffee, earthy, very aromatic. Taste is fresh coffee, chocolate, dry and a bit spicy, silky mouthfeel. Very nice.
