Many thanks to FrumptyDumpty for bringing a bunch of this to the HW Open House - probably my most anticipated beer of the day - cloudy, but actually quite clear considering its age - musty/cobweb aroma with light fruity esters and a decent dose of vanilla - kind of honey sweet with loads of vanilla from the aroma, giving it a sort of cake-like flavor (live some taste in Orval) - God bless beautiful mistakes like these.

Tap at HW Open House. After having the Gotsland beer I am expecting something really out there for this beer. Poured orangy copper. Aroma is present. A sour-like sweetness. Taste is bland version of the aroma. Does not have any of the irregular aspects of the Gotsland beer. The bottles for sale said it needs to be aged a bit longer, maybe those will be better.

Kind of a cloudy pour out of the tap, with a smallish, soapy head - there is a kind of chewy, tart, sourdough quality to the beer, I suppose from the bread yeast used to make it? - not the rye flavor you experience in other "rye beers," this sucker, literally, tastes like rye bread - not sure if that’s a good thing, but it makes for interesting drinking.

Thanks to JHop for sending this out to Richmond. Hazy orange color with a thin white head. Aroma of sweet honey. Sweet light grain flavor with a honey background.

750 poured into a mug. Color is really dark brown, with slight translucence at the edges, small tan head. Aroma is present - malty of course and a pleasantly sweet caramel aroma. Some plum/raison alcohol presence. Also a sour wheat aroma rises as it warms, Taste is a cripsy malt like flavor. Some roast presence. Some alcohol felt as well. Mouthfeel is a but fizzy for me. Medium body.

750 bottle. Poured brown with a small head into a wine glass. Just sightly translucent . Aroma is strong - all roasted coffee. Taste is a mix of oatmeal and coffee with a slight (I’ll give Frumpty Dumpty credit for pointing this out) Smacks cereal type taste (this was more present on tap though). Leaves a roasty aftertaste, medium body.

Found this old bottle at New Beer with the old more cartoon like label (best guess 2002). Poured black but looked dark brown coming out. Almost no head that quickly turned into small lacing on the sides. Aroma is strong, a very strong sweet aroma. Similar to Oggi’s Witch Doctor. Slight oxidation present as well. The sweetness is part plum/raison with trace alcohol. Taste again is very sweet - plum/raison, mixed with lots of chocolate. Leaves my mouth with a strong sweet afteraste, some very slight roastiness as well. Medum body, nice mouthfeel, if anything I would prefer just a bit more body and a bit less carbonation but overall nice. This is one of the sweetest beer I have ever come upon (level of Witch Doctor and above Meph). Very slight burn in throat.
So this beer was so good that I had to go out yesterday and get a newer bottle just to see it fresh. Of course, it wasn’t as sweet (even though the sweetness was present). IMouthfeel was a bit oily as well. It was less complex but still a fine brew all around. I am just lowering the overall rating a bit to reflect this.

An unclear orange-brown beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet alcoholic with strong notes of caramel, making it a really powerful aroma, the alcohol also renders it a hint of metal. The flavor is very complex and, as the aroma, very powerful, with strong notes of caramel and alcohol, but also with lesser notes of metal, over ripe fruit, and freash peaches. The alcohol pricklies the tongue and dries out the mouth.

Had this tapped from a barrel at Spuyten Duyvil, and as I walked out to the biergarden out back, I ran into beastiefan2k sitting there enjoying the same brew - small world, as they say - anyway, this beer less poured out of the cask than it did slide out (it kind of looked like maple syrup getting tapped out of a tree) - pretty thick and oily - very sour, bready aroma (go figure), with some notes of overripe apples and this nearly overwhelming kind of yogurt smell - the "yogurt-ness" follows through to the flavor, and it took some serious getting used to - quite tart and extremely vinous, with tannic qualities I’ve only experienced in lambics - woody and chewy - really quite unique stuff, and at this point in my beer drinking "career," anything this original has to get high marks.

This was part of a great beer day. Had a Christoffel Blonde before it.
I am entering a beer that has been retired before it has even been released, amazing. This is the HW beer made with bread yeast in collaboration with the owner of Spuyten Duyvil. Had it, guess where... at Spuyten. Wooden cask poured into a wine glass. Pretty much looks like a dark apple cider (the regular kind). Absolutely no head and no carbonation. Smell is extremely unique - sour apple cider, bread and a hint of smoked meat. Taste is alchy-sour and cider-like. My girlfriend though it was horrific but I thoroughly found it interesting and original. I was told it was originally more carbonated. Actually, enjoyed this with Notalush and lets see how his view of it was...
Rerate - had it yesterday at the HW open house. Kegged now. The beer cleared up a lot, color got lighter. Still same tastes, not as sour though. Still lack of carbonation.
