355 ml bottle, sold at Trader Joe’s as Brou Czech. Aagh! Big skunky smell when I pop the bottle. Skunk dwindles once poured in the glass, but another cheap lager that sat around God knows how long. Pours a nice, golden Pilsener color; at least this ain’t no Heineken wanna be; with a short-lived chunky white foam. Tasting brings more of that skunk, but not as overt. Sharp Saaz-type hop bitterness, but without the floral tones of a fresh pils. Just a strange backing of peppermint candy. Maybe some adjuncts in the export version. I’ll at least say it goes down well. This may actually be a recent bottle since I hadn’t seen this brand at TJ’s before. Would not rush out for another: you get one chance to make a good impression.

The bottle looks terrible, everything on it is written in German. The beer is very sourish and sharp, also dry. Really a nasty beer.

The bottle looks terrible. A Czech beer - but everything on it is written in German. The beer in the glass is very dark. Tastes very different, little bit like chocolate, little bit like coffee. But besomes more nasty with every gulp. Not a good beer.

Bottle. 3.7% ABV. I hope this is the right beer. This is labeled as "Paka Pramen" (without the "helles lagerbier" part) and it has a different ABV percentage but I can’t see any other pale "Paka Pramen" beer on the brewery’s list. God damn those eastern european breweries with their thousands of aliases they have for each beer. Anyway - clear golden color with a medium slowly-collapsing white head. Aroma is rather hoppy with a bit of malt. Sweetish malty flavor, slightly bready, with medium bitter finish. Light-bodied. A drinkable Pilsener but nothing more. Oh yeah, and it’s kosher!

Bottle sampled at Finn’s. Amber body under a fragile layer. Dry hopped aroma. Complex flavour of hops, dried fruits and some smokey notes towards the ending. Well bodied. A rather pleasant surprise (21.11.2007).

Bottle (purchased at the Pivni Galerie): Dark ruby amber coloured, bigger loose but persistent tanned head, sweet dark-malty and caramelly nose with a shovel of toasted malt and a dash of aromatic hops; medium bodied, robust sweet-bitter flavour, smooth MF; distinctive hoppiness in the sugary-caramelly finish. Good, well crafted stuff............

As Brou Czech Dark; bottle from Trader Joe’s. Something of a brown sugar aroma. Dark mahogany color with a little tan head. A bit thin in body, and the carbonation is mild and fizzy. The flavor seems to be light chocolate and medium roasted malt. The slightly sweet finish has a decent amount of bitter, and coffee seems to be present now. Drinks well.

Feinherber Antrunk, in Richtung Mittelteil wird es sehr leicht rauchmalzig. Hier kommt auch eine dezente Würze auf, das Bier bleibt mild, von der Intensität ist es aber noch in Ordnung. Herb-bitterer Nachgeschmack, cremig und würzig. Test vom 7.11.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 11,10,11,10,8,10 - 10,15

Brown bottle from Trader Joe’s. Aroma of pale malt and noble hop, but more pleasing than that of many beers. Amber tinged gold color with a respectable white head. About medium body with fizzy carbonation. The flavor is a bit caramel, but the noble hop is right on. The finish is fairly dry, and the hop persists nicely.

Bottle: Deep golden, smaller, but quite stable loose white head, faint sweet-malty nose with traces of aromatic hops; light to moderate bitter-sweet flavour, malty base detectable, but all in all light bodied; moderate bitter-sweet finish with a hint of smoke (!) in the aftertaste. Not great, but a well crafted Bohemian Pilsener.........
