Description
Hilden Brewing Company was established by Ann and Seamus Scullion in 1981 in the courtyard of Hilden House the former home of the Barbour linen barons. Here the Scullions reintroduced into Ireland the tradition of a local brewery making beers of distinctive character and taste. Hilden is now the oldest independent brewery on the island of Ireland. The brewery is now managed by Seamus and Ann’s son Owen who is a qualified and full time brewer.

Our craft beer takes a little bit longer to brew than others. Selecting the finest ingredients and handcrafting the traditional process demands patience. But 35 years? That’s how long we’ve been making our full flavoured beers, improving and perfecting them year after year. It makes us the oldest independent brewery in Ireland and those who drink our beer agree it’s been time well spent.

500 ml bottle, from Tesco Express, Belfast. ABV 4.7%. Hops are Galaxy and Brewer’s Gold. Golden colour, moderate white head. Somewhat better aroma than the other two Hilden beers I had, but still not good - again notes of stale broth, but also hints of citrussy and spicy hops. The flavour has citrussy notes, but also hints of vinegar and wood, which may or may not be caused by an infection.

500 ml bottle, as Hilden Belfast Blonde, from Tesco Express, Belfast. ABV 4.3%. Golden colour, small white head. Again a meaty aroma with notes of stale broth, also hints of sewage. Is there something wrong with the water in Northern Ireland? The flavour is slightly better, but fairly bland and unexciting. Not a noteworthy presence of the Saaz and Hersbrücker hops.
