About
Hilden Brewing Company was established by Ann and Seamus Scullion in 1981 in the courtyard of Hilden House the former home of the Barbour linen barons. Here the Scullions reintroduced into Ireland the tradition of a local brewery making beers of distinctive character and taste. Hilden is now the oldest independent brewery on the island of Ireland. The brewery is now managed by Seamus and Ann’s son Owen who is a qualified and full time brewer.

Our craft beer takes a little bit longer to brew than others. Selecting the finest ingredients and handcrafting the traditional process demands patience. But 35 years? That’s how long we’ve been making our full flavoured beers, improving and perfecting them year after year. It makes us the oldest independent brewery in Ireland and those who drink our beer agree it’s been time well spent.

Cask at the Bear (JDW), Maidenhead. A slightly hazy straw coloured pour with a loose white head; estery aroma with some pear juice; smooth grainy body, perhaps oaty, and a lemon taste; then a dry floral finish.

Cask handpull at Liberty Bounds JDW London. Clear gold lasting white head. A little diacetyl butter on the aroma some ok citrus fruits in the mouth. Not very exciting. Not great condition either.

Cask at Wetherspoons, Leeds railway station, Leeds, Yorkshire. A hazy golden/yellow coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, citrus, oat aroma. Tastes hoppy, citrus, oats, slight lemon, quite sweet. I had 3 pints of this APA and quite enjoyed it too.

Bottle from Nina’s Mini Market. Appearance - it opens with a Belgian like head which then quickly fades. I sense infection. It’s golden. Nose - confirmed infection, tangy sour wheat/barley notes. Taste - more of the same really. Palate - light bodied and tangy throughout. This beer is faulty. Overall - will need to retry on cask as this wasn’t in the condition it should’ve been.

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - amber with a nice fluffy head. Nose - toffee and biscuits. Red fruit lingering in the background. Taste - red fruit more at the front. Caramel biscuits sweeps through on the end. Palate - light to medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - decent ale.

Pours a hazy golden colour with a small lasting white head. A distinct porridge oat aroma, a touch of caramel and citrus. Sweet, some caramelised fruit and oat flavours. A light dry bitterness in the finish. Grew on me, different but a bit too sweet.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Hazy pale gold with a thick, lasting white head. Floral, with grapefruit pith and a hint of caramel.. Slightly cloying mouthfeel - is that the oats? A hint of bitter lemon in the mildly dry and moderately bitter finish. Not a fan of this, but at least it’s a step towards making Norn a little bluer.
