Description
Hilden Brewing Company was established by Ann and Seamus Scullion in 1981 in the courtyard of Hilden House the former home of the Barbour linen barons. Here the Scullions reintroduced into Ireland the tradition of a local brewery making beers of distinctive character and taste. Hilden is now the oldest independent brewery on the island of Ireland. The brewery is now managed by Seamus and Ann’s son Owen who is a qualified and full time brewer.

Our craft beer takes a little bit longer to brew than others. Selecting the finest ingredients and handcrafting the traditional process demands patience. But 35 years? That’s how long we’ve been making our full flavoured beers, improving and perfecting them year after year. It makes us the oldest independent brewery in Ireland and those who drink our beer agree it’s been time well spent.

Half pint, at Standing Order (JDW). Light brown head leaving fragile lacing behind. Ruby tints to a dark brown body. Smell of grainy chocolate. Earthy, chocolate malts in flavour mixed with sour fruits. Lifeless. Not well kept, being left over from the Wetherspoon festival. Quite possible to drink, though (Edinburgh, 29.11.2010).

Cask at The Central Bar JDW, London. Pours a dark, ruby-brown with a strong, creamy, tan head. Lightly roasted, dark malt aroma with hints of chocolate. Nice flavor, with good, dark malts, mild char and tobacco, with faint, roasty bitterness. Light to medium in body with fine carbonation. Dries out a touch in the finish, with lingering roasted malts. Solid porter, if not terribly dynamic.

Spoons Fest! Clear dark red - brown beer, residual tan head. Smooth low carbonation palate, semi dry. Light coffee and dark chocolate powder. Some sweeter red fruits in the undertone. A sprinkle of minerals in the dry finish. Pretty well joined up and decent. Would like to try an Imperial version this!
