This beer isn't as potent as I typically like my Barley Wines but it is still a decent brew. I think this would be a good transition beer into the Barley Wine world. Pours a dark brownish-red color with a thin beige head. Thin lacing. Aroma of malt, toffee, and hazelnut. On the sweet site with a big malt flavor, along with caramel/toffee and nuts. Finish is sweet, smooth and unassuming. I think this beer could be improved with more hops and a little more alcohol.

Almost black with a red tint, like some of Young's other products. Brown head that leaves a lace on the glass. Some sourness and acid in the aroma. Some skunky scent, but not enough to be unpleasant. Flavor begins sweet then bitter. Some chocolate and a little fruit in the taste. Finish is bitter. High alcohol content is not noticeable in the taste. Though the style is barley wine, I would describe it as a full-bodied bitter. Would go well with a mild cigar.

Brown with a thin head. Taste is sweeter than I expect from a bitter. Gets sweeter as it warms. A little more bitter taste in the finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Young's Dirty Dick's Ale on 03 Aug 2018 at 14:04 - Score: 5

A light amber or orange beer with a fine head. The aroma is flowery and fresh (probably from the elderflower. The flavor is dominated by the elderflower - very interesting - it sticks to your lips. But in the mouth the flavor dies away pretty fast and is only followed by a slight bitterness - a little more lingering would make it better.

Golden-amber. Quite yellow head, rather full, but collapsing quickly. Fine hops in the nose, some malt, wet chalk. DMS as well, but not much. Taste bitter from UK hops, but also vegetable bitterness. Slight impression of roastd malts - and another smell : drains (in a very nice way, if possible), meaty... Mouthfeel is a bit thin, sharp finish. Very reminding of a draught best Bitter. Nowhere as full as its 5.6 ABV would lead to expect - aroma is wonderful, shame about the finish.

Sweet smell, definetly elderflower. Dark amber, ok creamy head. The taste is a bit weird, it tastes as if a vicious old lady dropped her favorite liquor into my beer. Dusty when exhaling througn nose. Interesting, but I am not relly happpy with it, maybe when the weather is a bit warmer?

A dark brown beer with a light brown fine head that disappears quite quickly. The aroma is slightly fruity with hints of the alcohol. The flavor is powerfully fruity - a very nice malt blend - with definate notes of the alcohol and smoked malt. A good beer for a cold winter night with a snowstorm howling. A very nice beer.

A chestnut brown beer with a fine head. It has a slight fruity and spicy aroma. The flavor is a little flat with no sweetness. It contains notes of a little smoke and chocolate. It doesn''t have the smoothness that bitters usually have. But it ends on a very nice bitterness that lingers. An OK beer, but I rather want my bitters more smooth than this.

Substantial head that shrinks rapidly, but leaves a nice lacing. This beer is a murky brown, which suggests a complexity of flavors (and it doesn''t disappoint). Although it is low in the alcohol department for a barley wine, it is very heavy and has a lot of complex flavor to offer. I taste lots of toffee and caramel, with hints of apples and chocolate. The finish is were I taste the banana aspect indicated in the description. In short, even with its low alcohol content, this is a great barley wine.
