Description
Pelican Brewing Company was born at the beach in Pacific City in 1996. Here, in front of a rundown old building at the water’s edge, stood three enthusiastic young folks whose thirst for great beer overshadowed their understanding of what it would take to build a brewery. They did it anyway. And now twenty years later, older, and wiser, Pelican Brewing Company is a craft beer industry leader with fans throughout the Northwest and around the world. Today we’ve taken our breweries and our values to other Oregon coastal towns where we wake up each day in a place that reminds us that amazing is possible. Cheers fellow fanatics. This is as good as it gets.

Sampled at Dickinsonbeer’s Hoboken gathering - really hazy dark amber beer, with a dark tan head - aroma of oak, vanilla, dough, some bright fruity character, a little acidity - really chewy, with an oily mouthfeel - very heavy - flavors of caramel, toffee, treacle - a lot of fig and other dark fruit - a little sticky, but with a balancing alcohol warmth and herbal character in the finish - nice brew.

This is the most pure hops bomb ever. Cloudy golden color, liquid grapefruit, citrus, piney nose. Massive hop bombs. Excellent malt backbone upfront, then the biggest hop bomb, no a hop nuclear explosions take place, with liquid hops sucking on the finish.

Draft @ KLCC Microbrew Festival: Pours a dark brown color with a smaller off-white head. Aroma is sweet with malts, caramel, and kind of sugary. A little hoppiness in the flavor is coved by the brown sugar and caramel sweetness. Some dark fruitiness too. Quite enjoyable.

Thanks to Illinismitty for sharing this one from my wants list at our recent tasting. Bold black body, with a tall mocha head. Coffee, dark chocolate, roasty malt, and smoke aromas all swirl up from the glass Rich, full, complex flavor with some dryness and tang in the palate.

Bottle shared by Styles. Sanguine red-brown body, medium tan head. Sherry aroma, oxidized, with faded dusty hops, raisins, prune, and alcohol. Body features toffee and toast, warming alcohol, and hints of dark fruit, including prune and raisin. Oxidized sherry tones abundant. Bitter around the edges. Nice crisp sweetness of residual sugars towards the finish. A quite interesting mix of old ale characteristics and bitter, rindy hops that have faded over time. Very nice.

Bottle: Poured a delicious looking black with a modest tan head. Wonderful appearance. Aroma of roasty tones with coffee and a little bittersweet cocoa. Flavor is similar; lots of roasty notes and coffee. Just a slight hint of mocha and bitters in the tail. The flavor gave me more of the feel of a dry stout... still tasty though. Thanks BuckeyeBoy.

05 from Skyview. An aroma of very mild hops. Malt in the flavor and lots of spice, some barnyard character but not sour, at least not yet, but it definitely has a farmhouse quality to it. Cloudy yellow appearance that is right on for the style.

750 ml bottle; packaged 01/07. Aroma of sweet dark fruits, roasted malt, and a little yeast/spice. In strong light the color is deep ruby, with enticing bubbles, and a beige head that flattened rather soon. Arguably more than medium bodied, crudely creamy carbonation, and a hit of dark sugars and dark fruits that is nigh overwhelming. Some of it is plummy, some is caramel. The finish is dryer than might be expected, and there is a strong impression on the top of the tongue. Seems spicey or peppery. Not finding a lot of bitter, but this is complex enough that it is not really missed. Most excellent.

Slightly ruby accented brown body. Chewy dark cherries and brown sugar with a hint of pear. Wow - this is BIG - bigger than the others I had with Per at the brewpub a couple of years ago one fine Tuesday morning. Loads of brown sugar, alcohol, cherry, wood. Rich dark sugars in the burly, warming finish. Winter is surely the time to visit Pacific City.

Very deep mahogany colour. Abundant molasses, alcohol, aejo rum, brown sugar, burnt cherries in the nose. The body is creamy almost to the point of being flat, enlivened only by a surge of late alcoholic dryness. The flavour is sweet with brown sugar, rich toffee malts and subtle alcoholic splashes.
