Bottle. 2007 vintage. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a slightly sweetish malty spicy yeasty aroma with hints of caramel. Sweetish malty yesty spicy caramel flavor. Has a long warming sweetish malty spicy yeasty finish with hints of caramel in the aftertaste.

From bottle, Papsoes blindtasting #34. Pours golden amber with a mild hazy look and a good lasting and off-white head. Aroma is caramel, distinct bourbon to cognac like aroma too. Subdued sweet caramelish, light oxidised. Mild burning alcohol presence. Syrupy sweetness and distinct alcohol presence into the finish. Warming alcohol finish. Slight earthy and off.

2007 cork and wire 750mL. Damn cork was a main to get out and then it popped like a loud mofo, scared the crap out of me. Pours is loud and noise, full of vigorous sparkling clatter. The head is medium sized and bubbly. Color is dark brown, too dark to see through but clear when placed against the light. Aroma is lightly cherry aroma with light watery black bread and light raisin. Taste follows along with more cherry arising and getting a bit Flander’s like. A bit more of the black bread character as well. Very easy to drink, light sweetness, light cherry and all of that is surrounded by a very fizzy mouthfeel which works great with the lighter body. This may be the best Pelican beer I have had to date.

On tap at Bailey’s taproom. pours out a brown with some red highs topped off with a sand head. Aroma of sweetness lots of caramel malts and pit fruit. Tast was more of the sweetness caramel and pit fruit. Plenty of malts on this one.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. 2007 Vintage purchased mail order directly from the brewery. Pour is a dense brown with slight hazel notes. Some ruby noticeable in the light as well. Nice thick one inch tan head. Decent lacing. Aroma of huge sweet malty caramel, toast, and ripe fruit abound. Under that is a big dose of floral honey and earthiness. Nice full and engaging nose. The taste is the caramelized maltiness of the nose and the floral. There is also a cooking brown sugar sweetness which is very warming. The fruit is present as well, but it is more dark cherry and honey than the generic ripe fruit of the nose. The floral dominates the finish, which is quite dry. Palate is medium, perhaps a bit thinner than i was expecting which actually made the flavors pop out a bit more for me. This is also quite dry, with a fair amount of carbonation. Nice one.

2007 Vintage - 750 ml bottle purchased mail order directly from the Pelican brewery. Corked and caged. Opens with loud pop. Pour is mostly clear brown ruby with a one inch off white head. Some lacing. Aroma of sour black cherry, caramel maltiness behind that. The fruit aroma is a bit dusty smelling. The sour fades quick, leaving behind mostly the sweetish malt aroma. Some nice Dandelion floral notes are also present. Taste is the sour cherry of the nose, mixed with caramel and honey sweetness. Taste is mostly about the malt, with tart sour highlights. There is a nice grassy mineral flavor at the finish. Some woodiness present. Same caramelly malt as in the Pelican Bier de Garde. The slight dusty cardboard is also present, mostly in the longish finish. Palate is medium, highly carbonated nice and smooth. Nice one.

Brown. Lots of wood in the flavor and aroma. Vanilla, from oak I assume. Some whisky character, but it works well. A little sweet. Thanks to Skyview for sharing. 2009 edition. Bourbon and some spice. Low carbonation. Not nearly as good due to overwhelming bourbon. I won’t change my rating, but would rate this 6 3 6 3 13.

Sample at the Hopsnobbery Collective Barley Wine tasting on 03/14/2009: Thanks to Homerwantsbeer for sharing a bottle. This year’s version pours dark brown with a medium light tan head that recedes steadily. Thin rings of lacing slide down the glass slowly. Bready malt, dark fruit and caramel in the nose. Rich, syrupy body with flavors of toasted malt, caramel and moderately bitter hops. Warming alcohol is evident throughout. The finish is rich and fruity with malt and raisins left over. A solid Barley Wine overall.

Rich and syrupy body with flavors of roasted malt, caramel and dark fruit. Decent amount of hops in the background as well. The finish is full and malty with a lingering fruity aftertaste. Very good overall, and probably my favorite of the ’05-’07 vertical.
