22oz bottle shared by Skyview @ his Thrilla in Bob’s Villa Tasting. Poured into a copita glass with a dark copper color and just some lacing. Aroma is all strong, in your face with alcohol, thick sweet malts, astringent cherry as well. Can’t hide the fact that it is a barleywine. Taste is smoother than expected for such a nasal onslaught but still too boozy with the alcohol just burning my mouth. 8/3/7/3/15.
Hmm, goes to show you the state nature of rating. Had this again, side by side with the Perfect Storm and liked much more. 3yrs old at that point. It has a great buckwheat character on top of its strong boozy barleywine characteristics. Only a hint of astringency and cherry-alcohol yet some toffee to balance it. 8/4/7/3/16, this will be my new score.

courtesy of cigarcitybrew. pours amber with beige head. Aroma is fruity with notes of cherry and loaded with caramel malts. There is an enjoyable candi sugar nose coupled with a touch of vanilla. Taste is very smooth and sweet. I noted more of the dark fruits than in aroma with this light creamy vanilla mouthfeel. At 8abv, the beer will not let you down. The overall aspect coats the palate and leaves you wanting for more.

Finally, my second brew sampled from Pelican. YES. Pours copper to deep red cherry with thin tan head. The aroma is a smack in the face with a sack of ripe cherries backed up by raisins, some grainy malts, roasted malts and biscuit. Very fruity. The taste is similar with a load of rich sweet cherry goodness then moving toward sugar sweet malts and vanilla cream soda note just beyond midway. Very cherry brew.

Polished off a bottle last night at a party, but it was too awkward to take notes. Moderately sweet, alcohol was well hidden. Lots of cherry, toffee, fig, whisky and milk chocolate notes. The mouth was fairly smooth and malt accented. Finished with lingering toffee notes. Very well put together.

OTH tasting 09/06/08. After rating 1700+ and coming up on 20 years of drinking craft beer this is my first try of a Pelican brew. Yeah, I’m psyched. Let’s do this. Pours deep clear darkness with thin off white head. The aroma starts with dark fruity esters followed by roasty to almost nutty malts. I also get some lingering muted spices here and there. The taste begins with a watery sensation bringing in notes of dark fruity esters, rich and tasty roasted malts and deep yet mildly assertive nuttiness. Very nice.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel and fruit. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of over ripe fruit, caramel, and pumpernickle bread, as well as lighter notes of prunes, leading to a slightly alcoholic finish.

22 oz bottle graciously shared by csbosox. Pour is cloudy orange ruby, with a one inch slightly off white head. Aroma of sticky pine hops, some earthy hay. Taste is caramelly, piney, resiney hops balanced with a nice malt backbone. Bright, bitter, taste. Palate is coating, with bitterness that lingers. Nice IPA.

Draught @ the brewpub. Pours a hazy pale yellow color with a small white head. Has a wheat malty citrus aroma with hints of banana. Sweetish wheat malty yeasty citrus flavor with hints of clove and banana. Has a sweetish wheat malty finish with some hints of citrus.

Draught @ the brewpub. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Has a roasted malty chocolate and coffee aroma. Roasted malty bitter chocolate and coffee flavor with some hints of licorice. Also some hoppy hints. Has a roasted malty chocolate finish with some hints of bitterness in the aftertaste.
