Draught, half pint. @Artbeerfest 2019, Caminha (Portugal). 13/07/2019. Dark brown colour with a tiny tan head. Aroma is caramel malts, toffee, yeast and raisins. Taste is the same leading to a boozy and harsh finish. Next one please!

Quadrupel attempt by this unknown brewery in Spanish Basque country, thanks Stefan for sharing at Dok Brewing Festival. Thick and creamy, membrane-lacing, yellowish-ecru head on a hazy mahogany brown beer with ochre-ish edges. Aroma of bubblegum, rubber even, caramel candy, ripe banana, brown sugar, rainwater, candied fig, tea. Sweet onset, brown-sugary with pronounced bubblegum effect, banana ester and cooked pear impressions, medium carb, smooth and quite ‘fluffy’ mouthfeel; thoroughly caramelly and somewhat ‘sweetbready’ maltiness, honeyish sugariness lingering, tad earthy in the end with lingering sticky sweetness, lingering bubblegum effect and some warming, rum-like alcohol. I get the idea here, but this is bit of a caricature of Belgian style ‘strong dark ale’, too brown sugary sweet and too thin to absorb that sweetness; we are far removed from the great trappist legends in this style, though nothing is strictly wrong here and I can equally easily name several ‘new’ attempts at this style in Belgium that are of no better quality than this one. Drinkable in all but still a bit of a missed opportunity, especially since this is apparently intended as a celebration beer…

As the name says, an imperial porter aged on red wine barrels, by a brewery in Spanish Basque country. Thick and creamy, yellowish beige, stable head, black robe with thin mahogany edge. Aroma of bitter chocolate, toffee, toasted walnut, clear red wine, old oak wood, tawny port, wet leather. Sweetish onset, dried fig, raisins and a sourish effect not unlike blueberries, very light umami accent, softish carb, full and somewhat creamy mouthfeel; walnutty, toffeeish and bitter-chocolatey malt bittersweetness dried by early and quite outspoken red wine tartness and tannic woody dryness, with port-, earth- and leather-like aspects in the finish. Not sure what the below rater’s problem with this beer is, perhaps wine barrel aging on a porter or a stout doesn’t work for anyone and its typical tart, grapey and earthy effects are certainly present here, but given that this was the intention, I think this is quite well executed, though perhaps a bit crude around the edges. Would happily revisit from a bottle if I would ever encounter it again.
