650 ml bottle from Firefly. Pours a dark brown with persistent light head. Pleasant fruity malt aroma. Metallic to start but followed by dark fruit, green vegetable, and light citrus/pine flavors. Distinct. Maybe this one needs to sit for a bit though low in alcohol. Worth a second visit.

Bottle from The Met Mahogany with small beige head.Nose of dry malt/brown sugar.Pleasant earthy malt profile, toasty overtones. Medium hop bitterness. Wouldn’t really consider this a brown ale

650mL bottle, pours a dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma of nuts, mild hops and toasted malt. Flavour of mild bitter hops, nuts, toasted malt and pine trees. Finishes quite bitter. Pretty bland and uninspired for an attempt to exhibit craft beer for VCBW. Decent.

Bottle from Darby’s, Vancouver
Copper color, with small sized head. The aroma is nice with cereals, light toffee, caramel, fudge and a touch of vanilla. The flavor is good but less inspiring, with a fairly nice malt and caramel flavor; correct bitterness. Easy but pleasant; many Märzen in Germany are worse than this.

2012-04-25, bottle from Toby’s, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Dark mahogany color; medium sized head. Nice smoke aroma, vague ham. Strangely it tastes of soy sauce and Japanese brown seasonings; dark malt and chocolate, with moderate sweetness, and good body strength, and a peaty trace along with the common smoke, also traces of smoked ham; sweet caramel, more in the final; correct bitterness. A bit rough but good.

2012-01-09, bottle from Viti, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Dark brown color, almost black, with medium sized head. Aroma of smoke, with raisin, some oxidization, and a bit of paper and dust. Full bodied, with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel; malt and dark caramel flavor, with a peat backbone, wood, and a sourish note from the smoked malt; correct bitterness.
Bold, loud, unelegant, but pleasant.

2012-01-20, draught at Cobre restaurant on Powell St., Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Hazy amber color; small sized creamy head. The aroma is light, perfumy, some hop and malt. Good malt, caramel flavor, very dry, also because of the strong bitterness; the hopping is aromatic, sweaty, lightly resiny and fruity. The final is very bitter. It has a rustic English touch. Very good.

2011-09-16, bottle from Viti’s, Vancouver, 7-4-7-3-14=35
Beautiful bright amber color; nice head and lace. The aroma shows fruity hops in the beginning; pond water and dust later. Dry mouthfeel, with dry caramel flavor, medium roasted malts, and quite strong bitterness; the hopping has some qualities. A good Bitter.
