8.3/10 Appearance 8 Aroma 8 Flavor 8 Texture 9 Overall 8.5
Poured up on tap at the brewpub, Carlsbad, where it exhibits a clear deep copper colored body that supports a thin near white head of foam. The aroma offers up spicy hops and thin clouds of base malts and crystal malts. The taste delivers a pleasing semi vague spicy hop bite flowing into both mild sweet malts and crystal malts. Off in the background are thin murmurs of sweet dark fruity esters. This comes across as a tasty American barleywine.

Poured up on tap at Shoots where it exhibits a crystal clear pure gold colored body that supports a nice white head that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The modest aroma offers up spicy to woody hoppiness followed closely by various berry fruitiness and a bit of melon. The taste delivers tart to bitter spicy and woody hops nuanced by fairly sharp, largely bitter, berry like notes. It ends nice and crisp and killing any chance of any sweetness welling up. That works.

Pint can pours with a deep dark black colored body that has deep red mahogany hues and supports a dark tan head of foam. The aroma offers up chocolate malts to dark chocolate, a bit of marshmallow and then wide thin note of nuttiness. The taste delivers a pleasing blend of chocolate malts, dark roasted coffee flowing into a sweeter pool of malty goodness to midway. Toward the finish the dark chocolate ramps up with only murmurs of the nuttiness in tow. Fairly rich sipper.

Pint can pours with a nice black colored body that supports a mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up chocolate malts, a dash of caramel malts, as well as mostly vague spicy to maybe woody hoppiness. The taste delivers that same blend of mostly chocolate malts and then some caramel like malts to start. And like the nose too I get modes hop bitterness that seems spicy to woody to vaguely bitter citrus. Oakes is right, this could use a little more of a hop presence to round out the CDA experience. Really nice beer otherwise.
