12 oz can, one of many New Mexico IPAs found at a Total Wine in Albuquerque about a month ago. I have my Cowtown tulip glass ready for this tasting, can is opened and I proceed. The body is an indistinct yellow-gold followed up by a strong head of almost-white foam. I get a nose of lots of fruit, some tropical and a lesser amount of citrus. The drink finally, my first impression is a good one. Lemons and limes, white bread, a hint of tangerines, malt and a fine little hops bitterness. Nicely decent in a style I like less than the WC alternative. NM has a surprisingly strong presence in IPAs. Ex Novo in Corrales produces some good beers and La Cumbre is really good.

First bottle tried from The Bruery's barrel-aged collection bought from the brewery. A 12.7 oz bottle, it is now open and I have my Teku glass ready. Totally dark body with a ring of light tan bubbles. An attractive nose, there is baking chocolate, booze, dark fruit and scorched grain. A taste now. I have to say this is extraordinary. A truly fine imperial stout while it also has attributes of a dark Belgian ale, specifically a quadrupel. Black plums, dark chocolate, black sweet cherries, wheat bread, brandy from the barrel apparently, leather, a strong malt backbone and a noticeable alcohol burn as it goes down. A chewy beer, a lot of substance. This is quite a package in one bottle. An ABV this big, it may be the most potent beer I have ever tasted. Easily one of the best imperial stouts for me ever.

In front of me is a pint can that I obtained from Half Time a couple of months back. My ABGB snifter is receiving this pour this time. The appearance is black with some brown highlights showing up at the edges accompanied by a tall head of khaki foam. I smell malt and grain, fairly consistent with the style. The taste is not bad, not outstanding, again in line with black lagers as I know them. Baked grain, straw, a hint of chocolate providing a small sweetness and earth. A good representation.

Without an outfit like Half Time in NY I do not think I'd be able to sample all these beers from the NE part of the country. My first experience with Foam Brewers, time to see what they can do with a DIPA. Snifter ready, I make a pour. A lemonade appearing liquid, there is also a thin but steady skim of completely white foam. The nose is not strong, I do bet a bit of tropical and citrus but nothing that stands out. Curious. The taste is an improvement but I am not doing back flips for this one. A pineapple sweetness, some hoppiness, crackers, citrus, mangoes and malt. I will say the 16 oz can will be finished and I think this is a decent matchup between the WC and NE IPA styles. No more than that.

This 12 oz can came from Mr. T's, my local beer joint. Severely out of date but the price was decent for a single. In my Buffalo Bayou tulip glass I determine a gold-orange liquid with a limited cover of almost white foam. The smell appears to be all right, pineapple, yellow fruit and a hint of mango. The taste is decent without being inspiring. Grapefruit, pineapple, grain, kiwi, a significant hops presence and the accompanying bitterness. I'm getting a good sensation of fullness. Yes, decent and improving as I drink.

12 oz can bought at an Albuquerque Total Wine recently. Second Street has evolved into our favorite Santa Fe brewery for both their Railway location and the beer they make. But this beer is a new one to me. I have a tulip glass from Great Heights receiving the pour this early evening. A hazy orange-yellow body with a skim of fully white foam. I take a sniff and get tropical fruit, citrus in the background, white bread and a small hoppiness. The taste follows. Mostly all right with some pineapple, plenty of malt, some grapefruit bitterness and maybe a hint of guava. But I am getting something going a bit awry, kind of a leathery, nutty thing. Fortunately as I drink the can down the issue declines. Oh well, glad I tried the beer. Plenty of others at the brewery to drink next time in New Mexico.
