Belgian Style Sour Ale with Cherries
Tahoma is very similar to the Devils in process. The only difference is the base beer and the varietal of cherry, so much of this applies to both Krieks. To add depth and complexity, we use a blend of both house yeasts. The clean fruitiness of the Abbey, and the subtle fruit but dry, lager like breadiness of the Kölsch play well with what we’re going for. The base beer is allowed to ferment all the way through. As the beer is being racked onto cherries in the totes, a portion of Brett beer is added to aid in the inoculation. Then we seal em up and send them safely to the warehouse. The rest is out of our hands. We have to let go, and let it do its thing. If we’ve done our job right, and kept things clean, everything should be fine. We check on it from time to time to see how it’s progressing, but let it sit. The anticipation is wonderful…
Yeast: Abbey, Kolsch, Brettanomyces lambicus
Hops: Sterling
Malt: Pilsner, Wheat

Bottle apparently (marks on label are a bit disturbed) from Total Wine in Huntington Beach. Pours translucent gold with a slight white head. Aroma of sour malt with a hint of something that might be cherry. Med + body. Flavor is definitely sour. Cherry? Arguably. Mostly sour. Almost more citrus than cherry. Don’t think there’s much, if any, Brett here. Some pedio, some lactic, but I think it’s more complicated than that. Anyway, it is sour, and with time it gets more "cherry".

Bottle thanks to Russell. Pours a cloudy yellow gold with medium frothy white head. The aroma is strong butter and oak. Thin mouth, so much butter, light tartness, no.

Nice little 12.7 ounce bottle. Pours a cloudy apricot color with a small wispy white head. The aroma is deep funky sweet cherries. The flavor is lovely; woody, sawdust, sweet cherries, the malty Belgian ale background is like bubblegum and bananas, and unexpected in a sour, sugary natural cherries. Lovely interesting beer. Nothing dominates except maybe the sweetness of the Belgian ale and cherries. Light funk. Solid.

Spring cleaning notes. Tap at pub pours out a straw/orange with a touch of a head. Nose is cherries white grape and some barnyard notes. Taste is more of the cherry, grape combo, with a good puckerness.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a cloudy yellow with an orange tint and a small white head. Aroma of lightly sour fruits, and fuzzy stone fruits (like peach). Flavour of light fruits, vanilla, lots of tartness, though not as much as the Devil's Kriek - just enough sweetness to balanced. Decent, but not as complex or enjoyable as DK.

Very good sour. Unfortunately, it’s too big for its own good and, probably because of that, there’s a light buttery note. Good sour cherries with a distinctive taste from the Rainiers. Light gold with a little head. Strong pucker. A bit of funk complexity but it’s mostly just a laco sour cherry. Good beer, but it suffers from its strength, a fairly common problem for American sours.
