Bottle 0,33ltr: Dark brown colored brew with an medium dry bitter taste with some sweetness surrounded. More hints of caramel and less of citrus, and some roasted malts and coffee don't get the rye. They should blend an regular Duvel with an Colombus of 't IJ, but this is not an bad beer only bad categorized as Black IPA.

*Rating overgezet 2018* Het is een licht troebel goudbruin bier met een medium schuimkraag. Het aroma is moutig en fruitig. De smaak is moutig, gebrand en fruitig in de afdronk.

Bottle. Black pour. Aroma of sweet yeast esters, candy and banana. Taste has sweet yeast esters, caramel, some citrus, orange, banana and a yeasty finish. More duvel than ij unfortunately. Not very good.

6/II/18 - 33cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ home - BB: IX/2018 (2018-151)

Pretty clear purple brown beer, big solid creamy beige head, very stable, adhesive, bit of lacing in the glass. Aroma: bit sweet, malty, sugary touch, fruity, yeast, banana, where's my hops?? MF: very lively carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet start, sugary, lots of caramel, ripe banana, very yeasty, hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste: all banana, hint of citrus, sweet, yeast, caramel, grassy bitterness, bit metallic, more banana. This is not an IPA, and definitely not a black one either. Yeast is overpowering every bit of aromatic hops that might at one point have been in there, the taste is way more sweet than bitter, and there is not a trace of roast to be found. I'm not saying it's a bad beer, but the claim "black ipa" is ridiculous, and as a collab of two breweries that should know how to treat there hops, this beer is definitely below par.

"Collaboration" of Moortgat with 't IJ - which they partially own... Intended as a BIPA, this one shows a 'Belgian lace' around the glass, forming a thick, moussy, pale greyish beige head over a misty bronze robe with mahogany hue - not nearly as black as it should be. Aroma is however interesting, weird and definitely not very BIPA-like: ketchup and tomato concentrate, butterscotch, fried egg plant, banana, sweet cedar oil, lavender, freshly ironed cloth, sweet peas, omelette, pumpkin soup, vague hint of sewer water (H2S?). Sweetish onset, fig jam, ketchup, with a sourish elderberry-like accent beneath as well as early 'stings' of hop bitterness; minerally carbonation, sharp, over a butterscotch- and walnut-like malt middle. Bitter finish, peppercorns, a tad piney, leafy and rooty, but the malt sweetness comes through relatively unharmed. Not an unpleasant beer per se, but definitely not a 'true' black IPA - Moortgat should have turned to their other recent acquisition, Firestone Walker, and recreate their interpretation of this style, Wookey Jack, which I heard has been sadly discontinued meanwhile due to the waning popularity of black IPA.

Thuis uit een flesje. Diepdonkerbruin, goed beige schuim. Zowel een zoetje als goede bitterheid in de smaak. Neigt toch eerder naar een bokbier dan een ipa.

Dark brown pour, tan head. Notes of metal, malts, grains, typical Duvel yeast, citrus, dried fruit. Medium body, high carbonation, bitter-oxidized finish.

Bottle. Color: Dark brown, slightly hazy, big off-white head. Taste: Hints of rye and malt. Lightly hints of pepper, caramel and licorice. Strongly overwhelmed by the tropical notes from the used hopvariety. Bittery palate at finish. Getting a bit more balanced after a while, bit the tropical notes are a bit too strong in my opinion. Medium body, average carbonation.
