Cangrande is the most popular and loved member of Scaligeri’s medieval family. He has been able to make his dynasty one of the greatest and most important in Verona; he was not only a clever conqueror, a shrewd politician and a notorious administrator, but also a charitable patron.

Even the great poet Dante Alighieri, a friend and admirer of him, counted Cangrande among the Divine Comedy characters, in the third cantica (Paradise). And it is precisely his bravery and his several successes on the battlefield which inspired this bold, piney HELLES beer, with echoes of Bavarian brewing tradition.

Slightly hopped, golden in color, with herbaceous and acacia honeyed scents, fresh, with a pleasantly dry and very delicate taste: these are the peculiar characteristics of the HELLES.

From the tank at the brewery, courtesy of Mauro. Pours hazy golden with medium white head. Malty, some light lemon, some bread, crisp. Light sweetness. Light bodied. Nice one, was great on a hot day. Tried the bottle as well, wasn't nearly as impressive, but since bottle stayed in car trunk for couple of days I'm leaving the rate from the brewery.

Bottle, huge thanks Iznogud & Max! Hazy yellow-golden body, tiny white head. True to style aroma, white bread maltiness, well developed herbal hoppy touches, fresh. Mild light, soft peppery-herbal and slightly citric taste, vague malty undertones. Just slightly too subdued. Nice, drinkable lager, very well made, nuances away from best German stuff!

Huge gushing at the opening and about one third of the liquid is lost, really not good for a lager. Hazy translucent dark golden with a couple of fingers of head, quickly dissipating and leaving a bit of lacing. Average intense aroma shows honey and slight hay, with a vague fruitiness to it. Taste is cereal, honey sweetness and again that vague fruitiness where you just can't pick up a particular fruit. Medium to high sweet and medium to low bitter, with a sweetish/honeyish finish; still balanced enough. Light bodied, average carbonation, goes down very smooth and easy. Despite some evident flaws this was still a quite enjoyable, decently refreshing beer, that just went down very easy.

Heller, hefig malziger Beginn, eher wenig aromatisch und trocken. Das Bier bleibt auch im Mittelteil verhalten, die Hefigkeit hat einen belgischen Touch. Kurzer, etwas wässriger Nachgeschmack. 9/7/7/7/9/8
