Brown is the new Pale
Bitter is very much back, threatening Stout and Lager for the title of ‘top beer’ and no beer represents the style like Allsopp’s Best Bitter. Long out of fashion, so-called ‘brown beers’ are attracting a new generation of drinkers who love darker ales that symbolise ‘a drink you can only get down the pub’.

(Cask at Pikkulintu Ruttopuisto, 20251226) The beer poured mahogany coloured and clear. Its head was tiny and white. Aroma had toasted malts, earth and bitterness. Palate was medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were earth, toasted malts, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. Tasty.

Cask gravity at the Watford beer festival 2025. A mostly clear nut brown amber coloured pour with a loose off white head. Aroma is big rustic grains, twig, woodland walk, toffee, jammy fruits. Flavour is composed of nutty malts, twig, toasted brown bread, bark. Astringent grains in the finish. Palate is dry and grainy, mellow cask condition. Not bad.
