Believe it or not, there once was a time where beer and lemonade hadn’t been united in perfect harmony. Enter the Radler. A perfect 50/50 blend of beer and grapefruit soda makes for a light and crisp lager that is sure to shock your senses. When this was first introduced, fruit beers were relatively uncommon so “Shocked” represented the feeling many expressed to find a grapefruit soda mixed in their beer.

12 ounce bottle from Festival Foods Green Bay (near I-41). Hazy golden with a thin creamy head. A ring of head sticks around. Aroma of tart grapefruit, pale malt, wheat. Taste is sweet grapefruit soda, a bit of pith, pale malt. Medium bodied, syrupy. A hint of bitterness. Solid beer, actually.

A very simple beer. Aroma is just beer. Flavor is sweet up front with a hint of grapefruit and a slightly bitter finish with a little bit of Carbonic Tang mixed in.

Sample at Under Brew Skies 2017. Extremely pale yellow color, fluffy white head. Dusty peppery grapefruit aroma. Taste is bitter grapefruit. A proper radler, thank you.

Bottle. Pours a pale near clear yellow with a white head that dissipates immediately to the edges. Aroma has a very sweet grapefruit note with some sweet wheat, sweet grains and a bit of earthiness. Flavor has a syrupy grapefruit and sweet wheat note that is a not great.

Tap. I really don’t like radler’s, but I ordered this without knowing what it was and then was stuck with it. Pours clear pale yellow with a small white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma is grapefruit juice and that’s about it. Flavor is sweet grapefruit juice with a bit of a pear not mixed in. Body is light. This is not a beer.

On tap at Twin Cities Beer Fest, 2012. Hazy yellow. Big grapefruit aroma. Flavor is sweet with citrus. A good beverage for a hot summer day, this one could even be served over ice.
