A STOUT BREWED WITH RASPBERRIES & BLACKBERRIES FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF VA. Just as Patrick Henry once stood addressing the city of Richmond in 1775 to spur resistance against the tyrannical British Empire, 20 years ago we were stirred to join the cry for resistance against the tyrannical oppression of industrial beer. And now, the opening of our Richmond brewery is yet another shot in the salvo that has been fired on behalf of American brewing independence. If we wish to brew free, if we mean to retain our identity and preserve the privilege of access to independent craft beer, we must recognize it is a group effort. We do not stand alone. And so, on our new brewing grounds, we gathered with fellow craft breweries and “His Excellency,” Governor McAuliffe, to join together in force. A group cry of freedom & independence! Consider this aggressively hopped imperial stout, jam-packed with Virginia raspberries and blackberries, a testament to our passion and unwillingness to settle or sell out! We think Patrick Henry would be proud, and hope you will be too.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, pure deep brown coloured head, about three to four centimetres tall. Aroma of pure roasted malt, a ton of coffee and bitter grain notes along with some lactose, a dose of tobacco and a hint of the vanilla and caster sugar towards the end - quite strong, even at 2+ years old (from purchase date, even). Full-bodied; Deep super roasty and burnt coffee flavours hit hard with some lighter lactose and a dose more of the caramel, vanilla and especially tobacco flavours that have a lot of bitterness resident, all the while, with a super mild spicey notes - which is nice and shows some decent flavours, but a touch strong throughout, even at 2+ years aged to mellow out these pungent notes. Aftertaste shows some more pungent roasty and vanilla notes with a dose of peat and smoked flavours towards the end - still quite strong and incredibly pungent. Overall, a decent Imperial Stout that still shows way too much potency and pungent flavours, at 2 years, which is completely atypical and bad in terms of the beer and if you had it anywhere close to 'fresh'. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes, Fairfax, Virginia on 28-January-2017 for US$8,99 sampled two years later (plus a day) exactly on the 29th-January-2019 during a bit of snow and a 'polar vortex' (nothing).

Glad I tried this and the IPA but am also glad I only have 1 bottle of each instead of the case if 12 I would have had to buy in PA.
