This tart Saison was brewed with heirloom variety rustic grains from Anson Mills, a company who is known for preserving heirloom varieties and providing access to some of the most flavorful cereals for chefs. We chose to brew with Huguenot Black Oats, Black Rye, and Carolina Gold Rice Middlins for an added twist. The heirloom grains provided a nice rustic, tart backbone for our Brettanomyces mixed culture fermentation and extended aging.

375ml bottle.
Pours a hazy orange yellow, foam that you can control depending on how vigorous you pour it. Meh. That would work for any beer out there. This one’s got longevity.
I get some cloves and coriander in the smell. Banana is therebut mild. As is hints of Brett and a tartness.

The taste is not really what the smell suggested. Tartness. Funk. Oat spiciness, the other notes of a Saison seem to take a backseat.
Light bodied with ample carbonation. The oats seem to intensify with every sip and I can even taste the rice. No Beechwood aging here I’m guessing. A very tasty offering from Crooked Stave.

Pours a clear golden-bronze color with a medium ivory white head that diminishes gradually to a film. Stringy lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of tart fruit, funky yeast and malt. Light-bodied with a tart citric character and flavors of funky yeast and earthy rye malt. The finish is moderately tart with a lemony and peppery yeast aftertaste. Good beer overall.

Bottle thanks to Rainer. Pours a hazy gold with medium white head that lasts. The aroma is floral, yeast, oats. Medium body, yeast, floral, spice, light tartness, dry finish, good.

Bottle. Slightly hazy golden yellow color, white ice cream cone head. Aroma of earthy and floral straw, white pepper. Taste is softly sour raw sourdough bread, light spice and subtle lemon. Very easy drinking and lots of character for a 4.4% beer.
