Spiced Double Ale with fig paste, orange peels, ginger root, cardamom, cinnamon and cloves

Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.

2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Somewhat muted holiday spice brew. Not great, but not bad. Hint of solvent. Good body. Good finish.

I would drink this again. Not to “over” with the spices.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Epsom Circle Market. Aroma is strong spice--nutmeg, allspice, pepper, cardamom?, others--light citrus. Appearance is hazy mahogany without sparkle and nice foamy lacing. Taste is spices, pepper, mixed with sweet. Palate is medium bodied with thick, creamy texture and pleasant lively carbonation with slight numbing to the lips, spicy finish. Overall, spicy treat that is pretty unique.

Some bodega: pours mahogany with white head. Aroma is gingerbread, spice, more spice, and malts. Taste is much the same. Pretty intense on the spice aspect of it. Medium to full bodied. Alcohol well covered. Not bad but not something I ever crave.

Pours a copper from a bottle, thin quickly dissipating head. Aroma of caramel, cherry cough syrup, clove. Flavor very similar, but heavier on the clove and the cough syrup is mostly a boozy syrupiness. Good beer.

Bottle from jredmond. Pours clear copper with slight beige head. Aroma is juniper and mixed spice. Med body or so. Flavor is mixed - sort of pie spice mixed with twigs and/or juniper. Hence a bit woody. Interesting stuff.

Draught at Blind Pig. Dark amber with reddish tint, medium creamy beige head, strong spicy aroma with cinnamon and nutmeg flavors, low carbonation, very spicy taste with strong cinnamon presence, long finish with a bitter aftertaste. Very glogg-like indeed! It was too un-beer-like for me.
