Cherry Reds was made from a blend of three amber and red beers all made in winter 2022/2023. All used significant quantities of dark cane sugar and crystalised malted barley to produce rich red-brown worts. Aged hops were used relatively modestly to allow the growth of lactic acid bacteria resulting in increased acid production during fermentation to balance the sweetness of the worts.

Each underwent spontaneous fermentation in white Burgundy and red Bordeaux barrels for around two and a half years. The resulting beers were chosen for their red fruit aromatics and bright juicy acidity. Organic sour cherry juice was added just before bottling to complement the aromatics present in the blend.

The resulting beer is deep amber in colour, and round and fruity in character. Low bitterness and tannin leave balance to rest on the sweet-sour fruity axis. The cherry juice has added the faintest of pink hues and provided sugars for soft carbonation.

Bottle via the online shop. Not too lively a pour. Sits hazed copper red with a slim ring of just off white foam. Nose has oaky old school wine. Like it’s been in the glass overnight. Vanilla and cherry juice. Nicely buggy. Taste is pretty sweet and fruity up front with a light tart juicy character. Drinks easy overall although the condition could be livelier. This feels a tad flat and lifeless. Maybe it’ll spruce itself up. Juicy fruity vinous finish.
