In making Massive! Barrel aged we used only Simpson’s best pale malt and boiled for 8 hours, giving the beer a deep ruby color and rich malt flavor. We then aged Massive! in Rum barrels.

Bottle: Poured a deep dark brown color ale with a medium dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramelized malt notes with some nice rum notes and light vanilla notes. Taste is also a good mix of caramelized malt notes with some nice rum notes with not much residual sugar notes with some vanilla notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation and some warming alcohol notes. Interesting barleywine with nice barrel aging rum notes.

Much smoother than rye version, this is nice silky caramel malt with light vanilla, over alcohol warmth

Panda at home, thanks to Kenny, 21/10/23. Extremely dark mahogany brown with a beige cap that dissipates to a swirl. Nose is fruit cake mix, dates, rum snorter, brown sugar melt, Taste comprises figs, booze, rum barrel, toffee, toasted brown sugars, dates, soft malt edge, prunes, light spice. Full bodied and some, fine carbonation, semi drying close spiked with a bourbon infused alcohol xoak. Top notch BA BW ... solid sipper.

Hazy amber brown beer, small bubbly pale tan head. Smooth palate, pretty light for the weighty 14% abv. Smooth malts, a nice creamy sweetness, good caramel and toffee. Fair bit of salted caramel. A really nice savoury wood vibe, some vanilla oak underneath. Rich fruity rum, and thankfully, no estery rum, a valid way of making it, but not to my taste. Finishes smooth with all these cracking flavours making something greater than the sum of its parts. A banging barleywine, possibly the best rum ba barleywine I've had.

Bottle. Pours a near clear deep dirty brown with a off white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has lots of sweet grains and sweet bread with caramel, toffee and a hint of rum coming through. Flavor has sweet grains and bread with a growing toffee, light caramel and a bit of rum underlying.

Capped and ribboned 500 from Tavour. Pours near opaque ruddy brown with a slight, transient beige head. Aroma of rum, musty wood and toffee. Full bodied. Flavor is rum, heat, wood that actually isn't musty, and toffee. Not all that undry. Not bitter, but heat and rum make up for a lot. I opine the rum barrels weren't dried out!
