No 38. "A mint julep is not the product of a formula - it is ceremony, and must be performed by a gentleman possessing a true sense of artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients, and a proper appreciation of the occasion. It is a rite that must not be entrusted to a novice, a statistician, nor a Yankee."
- Henry Clay
Dang it! We were in there till the Yankee caveat. Pucker up, Buttercup!

Golden-amber, with a thin head. It’s pretty minty on the nose, with woody and alcohol. So a mess, and why put mint in this? Tart, but woody, the mint is sort of mellow on the palate. Weird. The base beer is sharp and woody, but the mint isn’t helping.

Pour is a hazy copper with a small white head. Aroma Is the barrel and the mint. A very odd combo. Flavor is way sour and spearmint follows like toothpaste. If this was their attempt at a mint julep beer they should have toned down the sourness. Even after a year in the bottle the sourness is still pulling the enamel off my teeth. I can see how some would like this and I can see how some would hate it. A very odd beer.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/13/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear golden amber/light orange color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart lemon, lime, spearmint, peach, apricot, pear, green apple, white grape, wine, vanilla, oak, hay, straw, herbal, grass, pepper, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of leather, bourbon, musty funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spearmint, bourbon barrel, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart lemon, lime, spearmint, peach, apricot, pear, green apple, white grape, wine, vanilla, oak, hay, straw, herbal, grass, pepper, wheat, and cracker; with lighter notes of leather, bourbon, musty funk, white wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, spearmint, peach, apricot, pear, green apple, white wine, vanilla, oak, hay, straw, herbal, grass, pepper, wheat, cracker, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spearmint, bourbon barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from tart/spiciness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately grainy/acidic, and lightly tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol for 8.9%. Overall this is a fantastic spiced sour/wild ale! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, spearmint, bourbon barrel, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink, with the balanced tart/acidic/drying finish. Pretty much perfectly balanced between spearmint, Brett, Lacto, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a nice solid malt backbone to keep the acidity in check. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle at Akkurat. Hazy golden with a small white head. Quite tart with oak, some fruit and light bourbon and a lot of spearmint. Not really my cup of tea.

Bottle from Wine & Cheese. Pours copper with a transient white head. Aroma is lightly sour with a fair amount of spearmint. Med + body. Flavor is mildly sour malt with fairly strong mint and some supporting fruits. Mint is not overpowering, but it dominates.

New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle: pours hazy orange with a white head. Aroma is light vanilla, mint, funk, and tree. Taste is quite minty. Exceeding tartness into the land of sour. Tree in taste. Pretty easy to drink. Interesting.

Bottle pour into taster cup at One Stop Market’s 30th Anniversary. Appearance is hazy, light brown with mild ring of head and lacing, minimal sparkle. Aroma is strong sour, boozy. Taste is sour apple, only mild contribution from the bourbon barrel and not getting the spearmint. Palate is light bodied with thin texture, lively carbonation, sour finish, mild freshness at the very end--spearmint? Overall, sour is not my bag and the bourbon barrel aging and spearmint are not enough to redeem this to me.

Bottle thanks to Will. Pours a hazy gold with small white head that lasts. The aroma is strong spearmint and wood. Thin, spearmint, very sour, oak, light booze, odd but good.
