Is this my first beer from J Wakefield? I'd have to check but I think it is. Poured from the can, looking low carb, took some vigor to produce a head but it did in fact make a modest layer of very fine beige bubbles. Nose is big on smoke and roasted malt with chocolate and molasses. The low carbonation feels velvety in the mouth, where the molasses sugars combine with a light acrid smoky bite. Fairly modest body makes this quite drinkable, happy about that. Semi-sweet to balanced, there aren't much hop flavors but there is a firm bitterness balancing out the finish. I would like this on cask. I might hope for more smoke but really its fine as is.

Both aromas and flavors are toast, dark malt and molasses. Mildly sweet up front with some bitter in the finish.

Pint can from Festival Northland, 12/27/20. Near black, medium dense creamy head, good retention. Looks kinda like a nitro beer poured 5 minutes ago. Aroma of mild smoke, carob, coffee. Kinda muted. I'll let it warm a bit. Maybe a little nuttiness as it warms but still pretty much the same. Taste is coffee, roast, chocolate, nuts. Hints of smoke. To call this a smoked porter is an isult, and is asinine. It's a good beer but would have been better without the smoke references. This is a joke of a smoked beer.

Keg tap at Fools Good, Lower East Side. Dark brown with a suggestion of purple. Not a lot of visible carbonation. Aroma of salted plum, woodsmoke and charcoal. The intense sweet/umami taste of the smoked malt is offset by a well-judged amount of earthy, bitter hop. More gorgeous plummy salty smokiness combined with a grounding bitterness in the long finish. An incredible porter, good enough to stand with the best of them.

Sampled at Dominion Wine pours a muddy brown with some fluffy, off white head. Nose is interesting, heavy malt and caramel, but quite earthy too, soil, mild smoke, a little meaty. Flavor has cola and malt and caramel, a little sausage, wet soil, wet tree bark. Finishes dry. Just not my thing.
