Brewed as part of our Singularity Series special release, Makkuro is our first ever imperial stout brewed without adjuncts. We've made stouts with cacao, coconut, vanilla, blueberry, ginger - all sorts. Whenever we did, there was a little voice saying "but it's so delicious as it is, why not just leave it?" So this time we've listened to that voice and created a deliciously drinkable imperial stout using nothing but the finest malts we could get our hands on. Not a doughnut in sight.

Can from The Rusty Bucket, Eltham. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, smoke, raisin, coffee. Taste is dark chocolate, smoke, caramel, lots of coffee. Roasty toasty aftertaste. An impy without the usual jazz & pzazz. Decent.

330ml draught at Cafe Sånn. Shared with Finn. A deep black body under a covering beige head, upper part lacing on the glassware. Attractive and smooth aromas of roasted dark malts, hints of cocoa and chocolate. Well balanced taste profile of cocoa-chocolate and dark berries followed by a backdrop of coffee towards a nicely roasted finish. Solid, rounded mouthfeel. Good drinking, indeed. 440ml can. Pours almost black with a tan head. Aroma of dark malts, dark chocolate, treacle, liquorice. Taste is rich and malty, dark chocolate, treacle, caramel, liquorice, some dark fruit, roast malts/coffee bitterness and a boozy warming finish. Full bodied, smooth. Excellent straight up impy.
The fact it took them 7 years to brew one without adjuncts is outrageous, especially considering this is actually really good - they weren't hiding behind adjuncts masking bad flavour profiles.
