Smoked India Black Ale.

What is with the paradoxical term 'Black IPA' anyway? Whatever it is, we do love black beers.. also smoked beers, and of course everyone loves hops these daze.. A complex blend various smoked, caramel and subdued roasted malts lay the base for a combination of piney, dank and (dark) fruity hops.. While there is a lot to contemplate with this beast, just be sure to enjoy it without getting too sucked into its enigmatic composition.

Label Design Notes: The layout of the label reinforces the absurdity by recalling both early promotional materials from Braun and Alfred Stieglitz's photo of Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain".

Meh. It's an interesting beer. Not sure what to classify it as.

Bottle. Deep brown colour with a beigeish brown foamy/creamy long-lasting head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is roasted malts, some smoked wet wooden tones with mild liquorice, alcohol and some toasted ryebready elements too. Flavour is roasted and smoked with some sweet caramel, toasted ryebread and mild wooden bitterness in the finish. Solid, with a good depth to it.

At a tasting, small stable creamy head, very dark brown color, aroma of onion and smoke with dark bread and a charred hint, flavor of dark bread, shrubby bitterness, citrus hint, onion whiff and some chocolate in the back. A bit over the peak but still quite enjoyable.

355ml bottle. Black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, subtle smoke, dark fruits, pine. Taste of roast malts, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, pine, smoke is so subtle it's barely there except in the finish which is slightly boozy. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, creamy mouthfeel.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers, Bury St Edmunds. Darkest brown with a touch of indigo and a big tan head. Salted plum, woodsmoke, oak, vanilla, a bit too much booze in the aroma but otherwise lovely. Sweet taste with raw cola nut bitterness in the finish. Charcoal, prunes and bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. Special.

12 oz. bottle, pours black with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out medium roasted malt, piney hops and a touch of smoke. Flavour is along the same lines, with piney hops, medium roast and light smoke. A bit earthy, with a roasty, peaty finish, with stale coffee grounds. Not very pleasant.
