Now, it is time to honour the man who dedicated over 50 years of his life to the cooperage at Pilsner Urquell, Josef “Pepa” Hrůza. Back in 2021, our Brewmaster had the rare honour to work alongside Pepa as he crafted the final two 40hl barrels of his storied career on the historic grounds of Pilsner Urquell. This marks the first time we have chosen to put a different beer in these barrels, as we feel we are ready to tip the cap to the man to whom we hold so much love and gratitude.
Introducing “Pepa” Specialní Pivo: Pitch-Lined Lager (7.2% abv)
A lengthy decoction mash, the finest of Czech Saaz hops, a months long slumber in the Pitch-Lined barrels, naturally carbonated and a long cold maturation. Pepa pours a burnt gold with a tall foam cap with an intriguing kiss of apricot; a sturdy malt backbone with notes of fresh sourdough and honey, refreshing balancing bitterness and a delicate Saaz expression lasting through the finish and of course the signature Urquell Pitch adding a layer of complexity that one must experience to fully comprehend.

Can: Poured a clear golden yellow color lager with a large white foamy head with great retention and some lacing. Aroma of cereal notes with some dry hoppy notes and faint residual sugar notes. Taste is also a mix of clean cereal notes with some floral dry hoppy notes and faint residual sugar notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Great lager but not the best one form this fine brewery.

A dark golden pils with a thin lacing white head. In aroma, nice crisp biscuit malt with herbal Saaz hops, light mineral notes, light cereal, very nice. In mouth, a nice crisp biscuit malt with Saaz hops, light mineral notes, light treacle, very nice. On tap at brewery.
