Biere de Garde Style Ale

Inspired by our brewery puppy, Hops, Biere de Guard Dog seems sweet enough will a strong malt presence lead by Munich and Vienna malts. But at 7% ABV, it packs a bite. Just ask our delivery guy!

Malts: Pils, Vienna, Dark Munch
Hops: Nugget, Strisselspalt

Bottle at night watching a movie. Plumish brown amber small head. Nose of overripe fruits and malt. Tastes of fig, old fruit salad, toasted malt, caramel, some peppery bite. Fne carbonation medium to low bodied. Semi sweet finish.

12 oz. bottle from Berkeley Bowl. It pours a burnt orange color with a fizzy off white head that shrinks rather quickly. The aroma has some fresh toasted malt notes, orange marmalade, honey and strong yet pleasant peppery/spicy yeast. Smells rustic and authentic especially for an American version of the style. The flavor is full with toasted malt, moldy orange, apple and pear with some musty cellar-like yeast notes and pepper near the finish. High carbonation. Medium full bodied, but finishes well attenuated although not exactly dry. There’s a good amount of sweetness here, but its balanced by great fermentation character and strong maltiness. Very good!

12oz bottle. Unfiltered orange-tan body. Thin, fading white head. Has some high temp/steam beer type aromatics. Zesty aggressive carbonation. Awkward overbearing noble hops. Kind of a mess. Has some musty, earthy tones which could be considered true to style if you search really hard. Maybe a little infected, as I would hope this would be more malty. Not happy that I bought a 4pack of it.

Bottle from Julio’s Fairly clear light golden color with a huge bubbly white head that persists forever. Big fruity notes with plenty of rustic earth to counter. Honey like maltiness, bubbly mouthfeel. Interesting beer, doesn’t really feel like a BdG, but they do call it imperial, still really enjoyed this.

Bottle at the Sampler in Brooklyn: pours murky copper with a white head. Aroma is light banana and other fruit with a good deal of yeast and some maltiness. Very much like a bier de garde. Nice taste. Some funk and light bitterness and a bit of sweetness. Good.

I like this one. Light florals and some citrus with a hint of booze and light funk. Pours golden without much head or lacing. Light sweetness in finish. Good package. Tao at pizzeria paradiso.
