Biere de Garde Style Ale

Inspired by our brewery puppy, Hops, Biere de Guard Dog seems sweet enough will a strong malt presence lead by Munich and Vienna malts. But at 7% ABV, it packs a bite. Just ask our delivery guy!

Malts: Pils, Vienna, Dark Munch
Hops: Nugget, Strisselspalt

Bottle from Wine Warehouse. Pours mildly hazy amber with a large, quickly-disappearing head. Light aroma of pear, honey, funk. Taste is funk, honey, pear, alcohol. Meh. I don’t think I particularly care for this style.

Bottle, vintage. From the start I think this is more like a well behaved saison than a garde. Yeah, same with finish, WTF? It’s ’spsed to be a BDG? Never the less, I found it to be effective. A quite palatable numbing beer. It was gone before I knew it. Good high alky blast. After a few moments you get over the soft, barely perceivable, bandaid effects.

Pour is a cloudy orange with a huge white head. Aroma is a nice fruity yeast ester with some musty basement and a heavy dose of candi sugar. Flavor is more of the yeast esters with a little vanilla and sugar covered raisins. I don’t think this beer is a spot on example of the style but I do like this because it’s a beer that shows off what the yeast can do.

This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a bronzed semi-burnt copper color. A finger’s worth of white foamy head quickly dissipated. Barely any lacing.
The smell had sweet bready/sweet biscuits roaming into a light citrus sweet/glazed floral qualities.
The taste followed through for the most part. Sweet breadiness strolls on into the aftertaste with the citrus making a decent effort to balance.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. Carbonation feels good, somewhat light allowing some pop from the citrus to hit in a nice harsh sort of way.
Overall, for me, I liked it, and though I haven’t had too many biere de gardes in my life, this one seemed just a tad heavier.

P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Not the most exciting beer but nice. Some fruitiness to it balanced out by spices and caramel. Pretty decent.

On tap at Haymarket. Hazy light amber with a small head. Aroma and taste of "tutti-frutti", yeast, grass and malt. The finish was quite dry. A bot boring in my opinion.

Bottle thanks to Rob. Pours a hazy orange with small white head that lasts. The aroma is strong floral, fruit, wheat. Medium mouth, similar flavors to nose, dry finish, decent.

12 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Served slightly chilled. Slightly hazy orange in color with minor cap white head around the edges of the glass. Aroma is spicy rye or pepper with yeast hints.

A subtle fruit helps to try and balance the spicy yeast. It is a yeasty beer and is pretty much to the style. Also just a trace of rustic yeast. Body is medium from a large yeast presence. Not complex but is within the style guidelines with the exception of the ABV. I liked it, drinks easy.

Bottle - hazy orange - doughy nose, with dusty yeast and orange marmalade - full carbonation in the mouth, but with a nice texture - moderate acidity cuts through the fairly hefty maltiness - flavors of Orange, honey, dough, dusty yeast, cobweb - finishes with moderately peppery spice - fairly well-executed.
