A spruce-infused pale ale, Pennsylvania Tuxedo pays homage to the flannel-suited hunters and gatherers who dwell deep in the backcountry of north-central PA.
Brewed in collaboration with family-run outdoor clothing company Woolrich, Pennsylvania Tuxedo is a sessionable concoction with a grassy citrus kick complemented by the resinous conifer notes of fresh green spruce tips. We went into the forests of north-central Pennsylvania and Georgetown, Del., to pick these fresh tips ourselves.
A dry yet doughy malt backbone lets the hops and spruce shine while still balancing out the bitterness, making this one an easy sipper.

Clear light amber and copper coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head with microbubbles. Aroma of grass, hay and a good deal of piney notes with a faint bit of hops. Full-bodied; Super piney and sprucey with a dip of a christmas tree and a lot of oak noticeable - way too woodsy for anyone, this is like liking a pine tree with no complexity - it’s simply pine. Aftertaste shows more pine, full-bodied sweetness and a lot of sugars directly from the pine tree - no complexity at all. Overall, a pretty bad beer, simply put. This has a lot of pine, a lot of resin and more spruce, with a heavy body, absolutely no complexity and no way out of those flavours - they are there and if you can stomach them, you might think this is halfway decent, but this is strong, raw and not good, period. Overall, yet another complete failure for DFH with a gimmick beer that doesn’t work, yet people are willing to spend arms and legs to get these beers - I have no clue how Stone and DFH do this, but I wish I could replicate the marketing and [who cares about the beer] rake in the millions. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Wegman’s in Alexandria, Virginia on 05-November-2015 for US$9,99/six pack, sampled at home in Washington on 25-June-2016.

Strawberry, grapefruit, marigold, and thistle nose. Spruce accents. Clear amber, medium firm head. Strawberry, rosehips, oak, and spruce. Medium body, moderate carbonation, good bitterness on the back end. Trademark Dogfish Head sweet malt bill balanced by significant dry-hopped bitterness. Very unique, great balance and complexity, quite enjoyable. It very well could inspire a whole new substyle of IPA.

Bottle from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours gold with a slight white head. Aroma seems pine/citrus. Med ++ body. Flavor is citrus/resin/fruit over a nice caramel backbone. It’s sort of evergreen with light stone fruits. Very tasty. There’s an usual flavor, pine but not pine. Good stuff. Heat is perhaps a flavor component.

The Sampler, Brooklyn bottle: pours a light brown with a white head. Aroma is much piney spruce and sugary malts. To me, this was really not much of a DIPA rather than a somewhat bitter, and quite piney, malty ale. I guess they do not have a name for that yet. Oh well. Pretty drinkable.

12 ounce bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 10/16/2015. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big spruce, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, bread, herbal, wood, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops, spruce tips, and moderate malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big spruce, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, light caramel, bread, herbal, wood, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate amount of herbal/woody/piney/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of spruce, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, lemon/orange peel, pine, light caramel, bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, spruce tips, and moderate malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Nice moderate dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly sticky, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent imperial pale ale style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/tropical hops, spruce tips, and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
