On tap at Haute Dish. Pours black with a chocolate brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has lots of dark grains with a touch chocolate and roast and a hint of tart red fruit. Flavor is dark grain and chocolate forward with a hint of tart red fruit underlying.

750 c&c from Nugget Market in Woodland, CA. Very, very dark, but under very strong light it’s darkly ruddy. Creamy beige/tan head. Mixed cherry/anise/malt aroma. Med + body. Flavor is dark treacle, anise, cherry and probably lots of other things. The thing is sour only because the malt isn’t allowed to be sweet. Still sour is as sour does, and this does fairly well. Overall it’s very complex to me, and very tasty to me as well.

A lightly hazed brown ale with a thin light mocha head. In aroma, nice sweet chocolate and cherries musty character, light vanilla extract, complex. In mouth, a sweet fruity chocolate malt with light cherry notes, light Brett, alcohol warmth, very nice. On tap at Bagby Beer.

3400th review! 750 ml bottle into tulip glass, a very recent 2015 release. Pours lightly hazy very dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a large cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, tart cherry, cranberry, green apple, light licorice, light white vinegar/oak/funk, light pepper, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of dark/roasted/bready malt, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, tart cherry, cranberry, green apple, light licorice, light white vinegar/oak/funk, light pepper, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate earthy/spicy/roasted bitterness and fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, molasses, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, tart cherry, cranberry, green apple, light licorice, light funk, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/spice/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly slick/acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic blended Flanders red/imperial stout style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
