A special release brew. 1337 Ale is a throwback recipe from co-founders Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet’s early days as homebrewers and salutes the legislation that legalized homebrewing.

Trivia: Signed into law in 1978, H.R. 1337 made homebrewed beer for personal or family use exempt from taxation and ignited a movement that led to the birth of the thriving craft beer industry in the USA.

Bottled from Deciccos. Amber pour white head. Whiff of caramel malts and hops. More of an English ipa. Decent.

Brown color with chill haze, thick beige head with good retention. Aroma of earthy baking brown bread, stone fruit, dark fruit. Taste is bittersweet, earthy overripe fruit. Tasty. Very different from today’s bitter bombs or fruity IPAs.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 650ml: Pours copper with a white head. Aroma is caramel, earthy hops, and some light sugariness. Taste is slightly bitter. There is a bit of sweetness. To me, this comes off like an old IPA. I don’t think it is, seeing as this seems to be everyone’s reaction to it. Not to say that there ain’t no freshness. Not bad, but kind of meh.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 7/25/14

Aroma: The nose is mostly caramel, buttery notes, some herbal hops, and citrus notes
Appearance: It pours a clear, bright caramel-orange color, thick beige head, and plenty of lace
Flavor: The flavor is lightly sweet, caramel mostly, with an herbal and earthy, fairly mild bitterness
Palate: Medium bodied, drinks extremely smoothly, with a soft carbonation, and light dryness
Overall Impression: Great look and feel here, but overall, this one didn't quite work. It's okay. The good news is, they've come along way from here. Still, it was worth trying, but I don't think they need to add it to the regular rotation or anything. This beer is definitely evidence in favor of the old adage that practice makes perfect.

22 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 8/15/2014. Pours lightly cloudy deep orange/copper color with a 2 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of orange, lemon zest, grapefruit, caramel, toast, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of citrus/floral hops and caramel/bready malt sweetness; with solid strength. Taste of orange, lemon zest, grapefruit, caramel, toast, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Light floral/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of orange, lemon zest, grapefruit, caramel, toast, bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and robustness of citrus/floral hops and caramel/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Overall this is a very nice beer. It is listed as an IPA, but this fully fits into the ESB style for me. Very nice balance and robustness of citrus/floral hops and caramel/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Clear light copper and bronze tinted golden coloured body with a thin, one centimetre tall white head. Aroma of metal, malt, raisins, alcohol and astringent bitterness. Medium-bodied; Assertive funky malt flavour up front with cardboard, metal, earth, nuts and very little else right behind. Aftertaste is relatively muted, but what is shown is the funkiness and bitterness noticeable up front - nothing exciting here and no hops at all. Overall, a very poor offering and to me - not an IPA in the slightest bit - this is more of an Amber Ale, and not a very good one of those. Definitely not worth buying, even if for cheap. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Falls Church (Tyson’s Corner), Virginia on 22-April-2014 for US$5.49 sampled at home in Washington on 11-May-2014.
