The red oak comes in the form of pieces of oak that have been drilled out in a “honeycomb” pattern to maximize surface area. This adds a warm oak note similar to what you’d find in a freshly toasted barrel.
Puya chiles are a Mexican varietal, similar to guajillo but hotter. They have “a light fruity flavor profile, with licorice and cherry undertones that brings to mind wild berries.”
CHILE ADDITION: We add actual dried chiles, not an extract
HEAT LEVEL: Definitely present and leaning towards warming. Chiles can be difficult to integrate into beer, but this captures both a pleasant heat and the distinctive flavors of the chile. It is very easy to either overwhelm the beer with capsicum heat or go the other direction and become unnoticeable except in name.
The name pretty much says it all. Hell can get hot, yo.

On tap at Surly, pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out crackery malt and a tiny hint of peppers. Flavour is fiery as hell, with tons of chilies. Too much for me, honestly. Fun extreme gimmick beer.

Minnesota Trip Beer #21. Keg at Surly, 5/8/16. Clear dark yellow. Aroma of bready malt, fruity peppers. The taste is pale bready malt and a fresh chili pepper finish. Medium bodied, lingering heat.

Draft: Clear, orange/amber with a small white head. Grain, candied tangerine/ apple aroma. Taste is sweetly fruited, grain malt.....followed by a fairly intense chile sting....but not all at once, the effect is cumulative...really kicks in after a few ounces....a little oily..... Tasty....in moderation.

Pint draft at Surly Brewing Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The pour is a clear yellow golden with small, well formed white head. The aroma is herbal, spicy vegetal, cereal grain along with a bit of sweetness. The taste starts with some earth straw, spice pepper right behind, and finishes with the traditional cereal grain sweetness of the base beer. The palate is medium bodied, soft carbonation and lingering sweet spicy finish. Fun beer, well executed, though I didn’t finish the full pint.

Mostly just a regular lager vibe until the kick at the end. Decently spicy. Golden pour with ok head and lacing. Spicy finish. Decent grain profile. Tap at Churchkey.

Tap at Blue Moon. Filtered amber-orange body. Thin, oily white head. Deep juicy pepper tones. Serious heat. has a nice berry tinged pepper tone. The oak smooth this out, but still a peppery beast all the way. Very cool beer, but intense. Palate destroyer.

Draft. Hazy yellow color, white head. Aroma of straw, hay, fresh black pepper, light pepper flesh. Taste starts with peppery straw, then the heat gradually sneaks up on you and takes over. Nice one if you like the heat.
