Imperial Porter with Chocolate and Raspberries

Bid farewell to winter’s cruel tyranny with the creamy, bittersweet dark chocolate flavors and fresh raspberry tartness of Alberta Clipper Porter. Named for the intense winter storms that sweep the Midwest and Great Lakes Regions, making us all a little tougher (and a lot colder), Alberta Clipper is the perfect treat to celebrate the return of milder weather and kiss those wintry winds goodbye… at least for a little while.

Taster at Dominion Wine and Beer. Pours a clear cola brown with an ecru head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Flavors of leather and a some licorice. Bitter roast finish.

12oz bottle. Opaque chunky thick brown-black body. Thin beige head. Really big raspberry tones. Juicy berry tones sort of dominate this one. The cocoa or chocolate-whatever gives it a thinnish sweet edge. Pretty solid for what it is, doesn’t come off all roasty like a stout, more restrained and easy going. Well crafted, fresh...the raspberry doesn’t so much complement as take over.

(bottle) clear, very dark brown colour with a small brown head; aroma of roast, slight tropical fruit; clean, balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish; slightly creamy palate; unexceptional

16oz pour at Galaxy Hut pours a translucent burnt brown with some fluffy, off white head. Nose is mostly molasses, Hershey’s powder and berry. Honestly, it doesn’t mesh like other similar beers. Flavor is the same, heavy chocolate syrup, heavy molasses, berry, some pepper, some malt. Full, sticky finish. 16oz was too much. Drank heavier than 7%.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a black color with a large foamy brown head that left good lacing. The aroma was toasty, toasty and had a touch of berry. The flavor was tangy berry and toasty malts. Long berry finish. Medium body. Ok.

Woot! A new Great Lakes beer in Charlottesville. Thank you Wine Warehouse! Bottle. Pours dark brown with a reddish tint. An inch of tan head. Heavy raspberry aroma, caramel, and coffee. Taste is a wonderful blend of coffee, raspberry, and chocolates. Yum.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, best before 9/13/2015. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of raspberry, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, light coffee, light toffee, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of raspberries, chocolate, and dark/roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of raspberry, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, light coffee, light toffee, and roasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of raspberry, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown bread, light coffee, light toffee, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of raspberry, chocolate, and dark/roasted malt flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and moderately creamy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice fruited porter style. All around good robustness, complexity, and balance of raspberry, chocolate, and dark/roasted malt flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. The raspberries had a bit more prominence in the aromas, but were very well balanced in the flavors. I was initially expecting the fruit flavors to be a bit bigger initially; but it turned out to be focused on the style with the fruit/chocolate additions accenting the main style. A very enjoyable offering.
