Suppai (sour) is a new plum sake from Wakayama, the plum heartland of Japan. The brewery has its own orchards and sticks to the principle of slow brew. Suppai is an exquisite, full, pure and sour umeshu, for which an extra quantity of special Nanko plums and a longer maturation have been used. Drink very cold, either straight or on-the-rocks.

Bottle, 72cl, at Jæren Ølfestival. A faintly hazy pale golden colored sake, still and headless, sort of oily. Very fruity aroma, tropical fruityness, lychee, strawberry and a touch of melon. It’s full-bodied, fruity-sweet and with a touch of fruity sourness. Tropical fruit, strawberry, lychee and a faint rice touch in the flavor too, some melon, cucumber and a citrusy hint. Lasting fruity finish. Really nice this one, mostly on the fruity side, with little focus on the rice. 220813

720 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet Sauda. ABV is 11%. Slightly hazy golden to orange colour, no carbonation. Aroma of plums, rice and exotic woodwork, hints of mushrooms and nuts. Medium sweet and slightly sour flavour, notes of plums and rice, some woody notes too. Unusual, interesting and quite good.
