Sample at the "Black Friday 03" tasting on 11/24/2017. Brown-black color with a medium tan head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Stringy lace. Aroma of malt, pine and hops. Medium body with flavors of resiny hops, roast malt and a bit of fruit. The finish is roasty with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Purchased with eleven brown bottled friends through a beer club. This might be the best of the four selections I got with this delivery. Faint praise. Poured into a handled beer glass it delivers an almost pure black liquid with a small head of beige bubbles that swiftly departs. It definitely smells resiny and earthy. A drink gives something better, a hop push, grass and something malty in the background. A decent bitter close. Certainly a finisher but not to be pursued again.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a thin white foamy to bubbly head quickly falling off and leaving no lace.
The aroma had a ton of dark roasted malts, some nuttiness. Crisp toast, and then burnt piney bitter hops. Mild citrus. English sort of earthy yeastiness. Slight black licorice.
The flavor tries to blend most of the prior mentioned aromas but leaves out the citrus portion. English yeastiness seems to ping the taste a bit more than expected than other black IPA’s I have had which seems to create a smoother aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Moderate carbonation. Once again, the bitterness level hitting my tongue seems a bit lower than expected than other black IPA’s.
Overall, interesting black IPA to say the least. First one I ever had with an English ale yeast to it. Not sure if I would have again. I can see why so many people just on this other than it’s brewed by Shipyard.

Location: 12 oz bottle from A&P Hoboken, 10/9/15
Aroma: The aroma is citrus and roast with a bit of pine and some earthy notes
Appearance: Dark brown in color with an average sized beige head on top
Flavor: The flavor is a mix of roasty and bitter, decent overall
Palate: Medium bodied with a solid mouthfeel, soft carbonation, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: Decent overall beer. Solid flavor, gets dry in the finish. Not great, but not bad either. Still, this one is pretty solid.

0.33 bottle from Pivoteka, thanks to Višnja. Pours dark brown, almost black with reddish brown tint, lasting beige head. Floral aroma, roasted malts, red fruits, dried plums. Smoky taste, bitter, dried fruits kick in the finish. Lasting bitterness, full body. A classic example.

Yes! Rocking the Shipyard, chic’s totally dig it. It must be that ringworm yeast. 12oz bottle pours with a deep dark brown colored body that supports a tall tan head of foam. The aroma offers up dusty dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malts, a bit of earthy chocolate malts and only a faint vague sense of hops. The taste is similar as I get a good load of dark roasted coffee and dark roasted malts blending into chocolate and short lived sweet malts. To midway the dark roasted malts take on more of a burnt to almost ashy sensation just has the timid hops manage to come forward. This seems like a roasted malt forward beer as I struggle to find much in the way of distinct hop notes. Still there’s isn’t anything wrong here either. Pretty nice until it warmed and the ringworm yeast kicked in with its odd butterscotch flavor. Hmmm.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a lighter cola coloured glow at the bottom, with a ridiculously thick, five centimetre tall very soapy tan head. Aroma of bright hops, resin, pine and grapefruit, all with some pungent roasted malt, yeast and a small amount of caramelised sugars. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty flavours at first with a good dose of malt coupled with a large hop presence, mostly from grapefruit and some floral elements. Aftertaste is well-rounded and gives off a malt-first taste that is followed with a good hit of hops and sweetness, but a fresh flavour throughout. Overall, a well-balanced beer that shows a good deal of complexity and no overt bitterness or pungency - just a solid IPA with roasted malt. I was more impressed than I thought I’d be, but this still isn’t a must-have beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 17-May-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 16-June-2015.

Bottle. Dark brown color, medium tan head. Aroma has fruit up front, roasty chocolate background. Taste has cocoa with light bitterness. Tasty enough.
