Our version is deeply spicy with both malted and unmalted rye and a hefty addition of juniper but, while rich, finishes dry and fruity thanks to a large honey addition and a portion of malt Dave smoked by hand over pear wood in the backyard. ABV is deceptive and balances against the stonefruit sweetness of dark munich. At 9.5% it should leave you well prepared for the brave new world we're heading into or at least blissfully despondent. Just remember, vikings didn't have health insurance either. Gonna go ahead and guess lots of us won't anymore, so we have priced Class War accordingly. Brewing for the proletariat.

Taster pour on tap at Tapped, Maplewood. Appearance is clear, dark brown (sort of like root beer), no discernible sparkle, finger width beige head with decent retention. Aroma is nuts and caramel, not much smoke in the aroma. Taste is interesting mix of smoke, apple cider and caramel (like a caramel covered apple vs. pear). Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with thin, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, this is not heavily smoked like a rauchbier but is more subtle. Sweetness (from the honey, I would imagine) is evident. Alcohol well hidden. Different to say the least.

Shared with wombat23 and darbeer75. Pours from the bottle murky brown. Creamy head that turns thin. Aroma is smoke, salami, chocolate. Taste is smokey sweet, hints of molasses, chocolate, and smoked meat. Body is full, oily, carbonation is moderate. Complex and well balanced. A great introduction to the style.

Tap at Upright Brewhouse. Deep dark brown with fine head and moderate lacing. Nose is smoke and fish sauce. Tastes of smoky wood, fish sauce, malt, plenty of honey, touch of bacon. Sticky and creamy mouthfeel. Today is filled with highs and lows.

Draft. Almost completely black color. Aroma of burning wood and kindling, but with no meatiness to it. Taste is burnt fruit, more smoke. More interesting than the small handful of others I’ve tried in this style, but a lot more alcohol.

The sampler, brooklyn tap: pours near black with little head. Aroma is smoke, sou sauce, and cigars. Tastes kind of like a stout, but not quite... Plenty of smoke. Good amount of soy sauce. Someone else noted fish sauce but i didnt get any in my tasting. Good, but not what i was expecting.
