A-BIG-ALE was the first canned Belgian brew from Sixpoint…

a wholly sanctified and indubitably bonafide high gravity elixir. Traditional Belgian yeast and candi sugars ensure a zealous fermentation, classic dark fruit flavors and a big ABV. We’re not religious about beer styles though, so we dosed this sucker with loads of American hops.

Tall slim can from Bert’s Deep amber color with a good sized white head with moderate staying power. The aroma hits me as spicy floral yeasty a bit hoppy and hints of cardboard. The flavor is sweet bready honey like maltiness with a solid hit of raisiny dark fruits and some amped up resiny hop flavor and bitterness. Hints of cardboard again in flavor. Its kind of a weird beer, not traditional Belgian in any sense but has hints of the inspiration in there. I thought some of the flavors clashed a little, and I could have done without the oxidation.

My can says 8%, go figger. From the start this has a sweet aroma that transfers to a near cloying sweet taste. Volatile to the olfactory. Doesn’t look bad but it is somewhat viscous on the palate. Does not hide alky well. No way is this a Belgian, heheh. Its really a strong Belgian if it is beldgy at all. Most of the sixpoint beers I’ve had have an in yer face attitude, and this does as well.

Can, 8% ABV. Clear amber with an inch of nearly white head that never quite disappears. Aroma of citrussy hops, caramel, biscuity dough, some dried fruit, pepper. Fairly sweet, mildly doughy. Some stewed fruit in the taste as well. Bitterness struggles against the sweetness a tad and it doesn’t dry out much. Spices come through a bit more towards the end. Pleasant enough hoppy amber with minor Belgian accents. Crazily high in alcohol for what it offers.

Location: 12 oz skinny can from Hoboken Cheese + Wine, 4/23/15, Now listed at 8% according to the can. I don't know if this should have a separate entry from the 6.6% version or not...

Aroma: The nose is Belgian yeast, spice, caramel, and a good amount of bread malts
Appearance: The pour is clear reddish-orange with a nice beige head and some strong lacing
Flavor: From a taste perspective, it is clean and mid-sweet, with a lightly bitter close
Palate: The body is medium, with a decent mouthfeel, fairly clean, and a slightly dry finish
Overall Impression: I found this to be a pretty nice Belgian Ale, with a good balance between the flavors. The hops play a nice role as well. Pretty good overall.
