Volume 19: Mosaic Single Hopped Rye Ale. Brewer “Spike” has an affinity towards rye malt, so this comes a no surprise.
Freshly harvested from Hop Breeding Company, LLC in Yakima Valley, the hops used in Side Project 19 “Mosaic” came freshly picked from the fields of Perrault Farms, to our brewery, and into your glass. Known as hop HBC 369 before official naming in 2011, Mosaic is the daughter of Simcoe (YCR 14) and a Nugget-derived male. To get the best of all worlds from this new Humulus lupus, we used 100% Mosaic throughout the brewing process to utilize all the flavor and aroma that this world-class hop has to offer.

$2.60 bottle from Wine Warehouse, CHO. Pours reddish-brown with a small beige head. Smells of malty pine. Tastes of funky wet paper, strange fruit, and pine.

Crisp ruby and crimson tinted deep copper coloured body with a very thin, half a centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rye, grain, wood, oak, caramel, toffee, raisins, nuts and a touch of alcohol. Medium-bodied; Deep rye flavour with a lot of grain and dry alcohol notes following and not much hops at all - very minimal. Aftertaste shows some caramelised sugars, a bit of grain, some oak and dry herbal flavours and a subdued hop character that only shows floral and perfumey notes. Overall, a rye beer for sure, but no hops to speak of and a rather simple taste. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 30-March-2014 for US$2,99 sampled at home here on the ’last day of summer’ on 01-September-2014.

12 ounce bottle. Hazy deep reddish orange color. Nice creamy beige head clings to glass for duration. Fresh citrus hop nose with notes of earthy caramel malt. Toasted malt flavor has subtle hints of rye and brown butter. Complex and spicy with an earthy dry finish. Nicely done.

Bottle - Fruity with some spice and rye. Dark clear amber with a rich brown frothy head. Sweet malt and fruit with an earthy hoppy and a bit of spice. Interesting and very decent.

Pours deep amber into a Sam glass. Tan head with good retention recedes to coat surface. Resin and meat aromas. Thin with sour meaty caramel upfront turning to mild resin in the medium length finish.

Courtesy of TheHOFF43. 12oz bottle pours with a clear copper body that has amber hues and supports a thin tan head. The modest aroma offers up ripe red grapes, raspberry gummy bears and some malts, a dash of pine and a sense of earthy tea well off in the background. The taste delivers slivers of malt sweetened fruity hops that are like the nose sort of ripe juicy red grape like. It then moves into a moderate level of resiny pine hop bitterness mixed with malts and a mild drying earthy tea sensation. Tasty indeed.

Bottle @ home, courtesy of Homer 321, I believe. Thanks! Dark reddish orange appearance with a cream colored head. A fair amount of toast and cracker in the nose along with some spicy, herbal hops. Kind of chewy, goopy malty flavor. Hops are kind of dull. Herbal, piney notes. Moderate to high sweetness. Moderate bitterness. This may be a touch old, but I’m still not a huge fan.

Dark amber, thick head, nice mosiac lemon rind kind of aroma. Sweet, fairly chewy crystal and Slightly herbal, and nice hops...moderate bitterness...actually the overload of hops works out for this.

New Beer Distributors, NYC 12oz ($3.95): Pours hazy red with beige head. Aroma is pine, tropical fruit, and grapefruit. Taste is quite fruity, moderately bitter, and full of malty rye. Nice smooth mouth feel. Nice fruity finish. Overall, quite a good balance.
