Volume 19: Mosaic Single Hopped Rye Ale. Brewer “Spike” has an affinity towards rye malt, so this comes a no surprise.

Freshly harvested from Hop Breeding Company, LLC in Yakima Valley, the hops used in Side Project 19 “Mosaic” came freshly picked from the fields of Perrault Farms, to our brewery, and into your glass. Known as hop HBC 369 before official naming in 2011, Mosaic is the daughter of Simcoe (YCR 14) and a Nugget-derived male. To get the best of all worlds from this new Humulus lupus, we used 100% Mosaic throughout the brewing process to utilize all the flavor and aroma that this world-class hop has to offer.

Bottled in virginia. Poured orangey, nice hops and obvious rye. Not bad, but nothing amazing going on here.

Bottle. Clear, medium amber-brown. Medium head with a lot of lace. Nice grapefruit taste and aroma. Even though I’m not crazy about IPAs this one is not bad.

Red color with creamy tan lasting head. Flavor is complex combination of pine tree and grapefruit hop bitterness, spice from rye malt, and just a hint of sweetness at the finish. IPA is not my favorite style but this once has rye spice to offset some of the hop bitterness.

Tap at Gambrinus. Pours a clear copper with a finger of foam. Gummy bears, pineapple and blood oranges on the nose. Well-rounded on the palate with a slightly pillowy mouthfeel. Medium bitterness and a touch of tropical sweetness. Light pine on the finish. Quite enjoyable.

Bitter, resinous rye IPA, relying more on the piney and floral notes of the Mosaic to power the dry back end. Nice citric middle, though, one that balances out the IBUs and leads to a deliciously spicy rye fade. Caramel malt sweetness adds a nice padding, but the finish is pure hop vengeance. Solid.

Can. Cloudy amber body with a frothy, off-white head. Malty aroma of caramel, toffee, bread, grapefruit, pine. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Taste of herbs, bread, pine, resin.

12 oz can thanks to jbruner’s FBW contest. Aroma is tropical fruit, pine, light perfume, onion. Pours bright amber with a medium beige head with great retention; leaves a little lace. Taste has medium bitterness backed by equal malt sweetness. Good.
