A rich, dark porter based on a 19th century recipe. Aged in ex-Islay whisky barrels, it layers smoke, whisky, and oak over deep roasted malt, finishing with lingering cocoa, coffee and char.

Can from Westhill Service Station (a guess). It pours jet black with a a dark brown head. The aroma is rich and smokey, charred oak, peat reek, medicinal Islay whisky, bonfire, ash, smoked meats, cacao nibs, dark chocolate and plenty of umami. The taste is dry, dark roasted malt, charred oak, bitter - sweet, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, coffee, more restrained smokey character (than on the nose), distant bonfire embers, smoked ham, slightly medicinal, umami, liquorice and a puff of pipe tobacco with a drying, roasty finale. Medium body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Smokey is more contained on the taste. Lovely depth of flavours and unique character. Very well done.

Can from Lupe Pintos. Black body with a thick tan head that gradually fades. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of green chillies, filter coffee and whisky. Flavour of roasted malt and liquorice. Medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. Roasted and concentrated. The whisky notes take a bit of getting used to but this is a tasty porter.

Can.

Nose is licorice, umami, hint of smoke, whiskey, earthy. Taste is peaty, ash, leading to soy, whiskey, hint of blackcurrant, with a touch of dark chocolate and coffee in the bitter ashy finish.

Really superb. It's complex but very well balanced.
