Silvester is the German name for New Year's Eve, named after Pope Sylvester I, whose feast day is December 31st. Silvesterbier is a rarity even in Germany. Neuwitzberg is a hamlet nestled in the alps on the German-Polish border and they keep the tradition of Silvesterbier alive. Brewed on the Beaver Moon of the previous year, Silvesterbier is a moderately hopped, deeply golden lager made at 15 degrees Plato with an abv around 6.5 percent. The Neuwitzberg brewers included a dark malted wheat-in violation of the Reinheitsgebot. In 1714 the authorities investigated this violation and moved to close the offending breweries. “A totally delicious and badass Lager.

16 oz. can, pours a clear copper golden with a large white head. Aroma reveals fresh corn, straw, and bread malt. Flavour is clean, with fresh straw, some corn, bready malt, pretty low on the hops, finishing with straw, a touch of booze, and lightly sweet biscuity malt. Not the type of lager I usually like, but this is admittedly well-made. Solid.

16oz can from Tavour. Pale, clear golden, small head fades to thin layer. Grainy, biscuity aroma, faint citrus. Taste presents a little tingle right up front, followed by bready notes. The finish is mildly fruity and partially dry with a little bit of lingering bitterness.

New style - Silvesterbier

Bready, sharp pine bitterness, but crisp finish. I can taste the German influence with this style mixed in with a hoppy Czech Pilsner. Very unique. Very cool story about the history of this style too!
