First I thot this was the other avery 21, impy stout but after further investigation I found its the anniversary edition. Get it straight avery, be careful of the name. Nice and dark. Bready malty aroma, quite different than the a typical black ipa. Quite strong and malty on the taste as well. Hops in the background but not like most black ipa or rye beers. A different kind of black ipa fer sure.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of grassy hops and a bit of earthy pine backed by some dark grains. Flavor has a good amount of earthy dark grains with some pine and grass backing.

Sampled at Whole Foods Clarendon, pours a murky brown with some clumpy off white head. Nose has a lot of earthy/dusty notes, pine sap, a little soap, some herbs. Flavor is sweeter than you’d think, a little birch, mild turbinado sugar, then the soap and pine come through, a little blood orange as well. Bitter, earthy finish.

Whole Foods Bowery, NYC 650ml ($9): Pours dark brown with a brownish head. Aroma is heavy on the chocolate malts with a nice hoppy thing going down as well. Taste, as others have noted, is pretty heavy on the malts. However, the IPA element is not to be entirely dismissed, even though it is the second tier flavor. I found this rather easy to drink.

22oz bottle. Deep unfiltered brown body, shades of amber. Impressive creamy, steady, beige head. Smooth, clean brown malt aroma. A beast of a brown ale, great balance between the massive malts and the hops...which somehow manage to peak out from underneath the rich, sweet thickness. Rich specialty malt depth. Well crafted, well executed, enjoyable beer.
