Balanced and not bad but not overwhelming in any of its individual elements. Pours dark brown with mocha head and lacing and a copperish hue to the beer. Some roast and light citrus hops aroma. A little booze as well. Medium bitter finish as much from booze as hops and roast.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 5/13/2014. Pours crystal clear deep reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, chocolate, toffee, toast, nuttiness, brown bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus hops and moderate dark/toasted malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, chocolate, toffee, toast, nuttiness, brown bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, chocolate, toffee, toast, nuttiness, brown bread, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and complexity of juicy citrus hops and dark/toasted malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, lightly creamy, and fairly sticky/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial brown IPA. All around good complexity and balance of juicy citrus hops and dark/toasted malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottled in May 2014.

It’s quite the impressive looking brew in my glass; a 2 finger head of off white foam sitting on a deep brown liquid with shows some reddish highlights.

It smells like a Brown. Roasted malt with some nutty notes, a bit of a citrus kick in the background.

Yummy. Roasted malt and nutty flavours with some light or nor not so light notes of chocolate, light coffee, a desirable amount of hoppy bitterness, for me, in a Brown Ale. 8.7% abv but it is well hidden.

Near perfect mouthfeel...silky smooth, close to full in the mouth.

This is delicious! All of the nice qualities of a Brown Ale, just bumped up a few abv points. I know this could be just as good with less alcohol but it IS an anniversary so I’ll let that slide. --- Beer merged from original tick of Twenty One on 12 Jul 2014 at 13:22 - Score: 9. Original review text: A bumped up Brown Ale, which usually doesn't work for me, but this one is pretty faithfull to the base beer. I like! 4.25

Bottle pour split. Pours near black with an odd hop spicy aroma. Caramel and a little chocolate flavor with some definite spice to it. Slight vegetable flavor too. This one is kind of odd for me. It’s unique in a lot of ways, which is nice. It has a very unique transition from dark flavor, to a hoppy kind of citrus flavor finish. I don’t know if I was expecting more from this beer, but I’m a little disappointed. Okay beer, but not really for me.

Sample at Daily Growler UA. Pours a dark reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, piney hops and citrus. The finish is caramel malt up front with a resiny hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle @ home. Pours a deep copper / brown appearance with a brown head. Aroma is really spicy (mint, pine, and ganja) along with some cocoa, roast, and caramel. Some grassy and resiny notes in there as well with a bit of grapefruit / citrus. Medium bodied. Bready / cookie dough malty flavor. A little bit of chocolate. Herbal / piney hops with some resin. A little gooey and boozy on the back end but a pretty solid overall brew.
