Ale Fermented in Oak

Field Blend is an exercise in embracing time as a source of wonder rather than an instrument of control. This is one of an ongoing series of beers which exist because of an intersection of elements which made themselves available at a given point during harvest.

2024 Cherry Field Blend was made from a blend of barrel-aged saison refermented on foraged Cornelian cherries, organic Balaton cherries from the Old Weddle Farm (thanks to OPMA), and organic Van cherries from Collins Family Orchards.

This beer was refermented to condition in the bottle.

Bottled 10/10/2024

Conditioned with: Organic cane sugar.
Cellar: best before early 2027

Bottle. Pours lightly hazy cranberry, small off white head, good lacing. Aroma is cherries, dust, oak. Flavor is very light tart, light plus funk, bright cherry. Light body, soft mouthfeel.

Reddish-purple colour. Thin head. There's a little bit of brett on this, with a fair amount of cherry. On the palate, that pie cherry. Some nice pitty bitterness. I'd say somewhat more acidic than the baseline Floodland, but not overly so. That bitterness gives it a different sense of balance. Good.

750mL bottle, pours a hazy bright dark red with a medium off-white, pinkish head. Nose reveals subtle, dry cherries upfront, gentle bugginess, and a touch of oak. Flavour has deep pitted cherries, a hint of phenols, light tannins, oak, and a touch of bugs. Doesn’t have the cherry depth that I hoped for. Not at the level of typical Floodland, but still decent.

Poured from 750mL bottle (bottled 10/10/2024). Medium brownish red with small off white head. Cherry, lightly dry cherry skins almost with some cherry pits. Light tartness, medium dry, okay.

750mL bottle. Pours murky dull ruby with a small white head. Lots of earthy cherries and rustic yeast on the nose. Flavour has cherry pits, some skins, earthy yeast, oak. There's also a slight plastic character that I can't shake, like a Fisher-Price toy. Overall good, but not at the usual Floodland level.
