North Coast Brewing’s Class of ’88 Barleywine is a collaboration with Rogue Ales and Deschutes Brewery to celebrate their shared 25th anniversary of brewing craft ales. The three breweries teamed up at all three locations to create their own distinctive versions of a barleywine ale based on the original guidelines in Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style. The results are three delicious variations on a theme and a strong sense of partnership and camaraderie among the brewers and breweries. The brewers are Pat Broderick and Ken Kelley from North Coast, John C. Maier from Rogue and Cam O’Connor from Deschutes.

Bottle shared by Countbeer. Thanks! Hazy orange to amber color, small to average to medium sized white head that diminishes fairly quickly but leaves fair lacing. Aroma is malts, hops, sweetness, sweet hops. Taste malts, hops, sweet hops, bitter, overripe fruits, resin, pine. Lightly sticky texture, medium body and carbonation. Very nice!

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a deep hazy orange to amber color with a one and a half finger white head with a decent soapy lacing clinging around the glass.
The smell had an earthy golden raisin, orange peel, apricot, light caramel, toasted bread with a florally grassy pine.
The taste took those flavors to combine enthusiastically to make a fruity sweet and a somewhat boozy sweet.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with more of a sessionable quality about it. There is a light lingering bitter citrus hoppy finish.
Overall, good blonde barleywine that I would have again.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 03/2013. Pours slightly cloudy deep orange amber color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of golden raisin, pineapple, orange peel, apricot, brown sugar, light caramel, toasted bread, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, yeast fruitiness, and pale malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of golden raisin, pineapple, orange peel, apricot, brown sugar, light caramel, toasted bread, floral, grass, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of pine/earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of golden raisin, pineapple, orange peel, apricot, brown sugar, light caramel, toasted bread, pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops, yeast fruitiness, and pale malt sweetness; with a great sweetness/bitterness balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and slightly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice blonde barleywine style. All around good complexity and balance of citrus/pine hops, yeast fruitiness, and pale malt sweetness; and very smooth and fairly crisp to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours amber into a snifter. White head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Caramel aroma. Soft with toffee and caramel upfront turning to oak on the lasting finish.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Sparrow, 10/27/13

Aroma: The aroma is citrus fruit, some bready malts, leaves, and a little wood
Appearance: It pours a murky gold-orange color with an off-white head and average lace
Flavor: Tastes pretty balanced, a little fruity, malty/bready, somewhat sweet, with a nice bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-full, it a bit of heat, but not much, and a lengthy finish
Overall Impression: Interesting stuff. There's a lot going on here in such a way that it almost gets a little murky. I still found a lot to like. There's enough hops here to keep it balanced and away from the overly sweet side of the style. Maybe it does get a little sticky toward the end palate, but that is only a very minor issue.
