North Coast Brewing’s Class of ’88 Barleywine is a collaboration with Rogue Ales and Deschutes Brewery to celebrate their shared 25th anniversary of brewing craft ales. The three breweries teamed up at all three locations to create their own distinctive versions of a barleywine ale based on the original guidelines in Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style. The results are three delicious variations on a theme and a strong sense of partnership and camaraderie among the brewers and breweries. The brewers are Pat Broderick and Ken Kelley from North Coast, John C. Maier from Rogue and Cam O’Connor from Deschutes.

21.06.2013, tap @ Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale:
Small shortlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet fruity, caramel malts, wet leafs, hops, toffee, dried fruits, hints of pine needles. Taste is wet leafs, soil, hops, harsh grass, caramel, alcohol, pine needles, citrus peel. Longlasting bitterness, slightly dry mouthfeel. Fair enough, nothing special about it.

On tap at the vintage. This must be one of the better wannah bee American barley wines I’ve had. From the start I just tho it was just a strong ale. Pour is a very light orange brownish beer. . Barely any aroma. Some co2. Nice lacing. Not sure what so special except that it really hides the alky well. Never thot it was over 6%. Not bad for BW but of course nothing like the aged real English BWs. Yep, just thot this was some kind of strong apa, heheheh.

Draft. Tart fruity caramel malt and brown sugar aroma. Clear chestnut with a small off-white head. Tart lactic nutty malt flavor with a light bitter finish. Light body, moderate carbonation. Not one of my favorite styles, so I may be a little harsh.

Rated July 2013. Cool looking caged and corked 750mL bottle pours out with a clear copper body that supports a tan head of foam. The modest aroma offers up plums and some mild sweet raisin notes as well as malt soaked pine hops. The taste delivers estery prunes and raisins as well as firm levels of resiny pine hoppiness mixing with a lighter note of grapefruit hop bitterness. This comes together pretty well as it warms a bit. About half way through it I was really enjoying as it was just hitting on all cylinders. Pretty nice now and possibly better in about a year.

750 c&c from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear golden copper with a foamy/frothy off white head. Aroma is rather pine/evergreen! Full bodied - at least til the carb goes off. Flavor is evergreen. There’s a malt background, but this is evergreen. Amazing. A barleywine that isn’t sticky/brown sugar. Ok, it isn’t really dry, but close enough. With time I’m getting some light pitted fruit and woody astringency. Heat? My nose and brain say yes in a way, but my taster says nah! Really good product from North Coast.

Sample at The Daily Growler. Pours a clear bright orange color with a medium off-white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of citrusy hops, butterscotch and grainy malt. The finish is fruity with touches of pine and fruity esters left behind. Decent overall.

750 ml bottle from Jane’s Beer Store. Nose is toffee, golden raisins, and a hint of bubblegum. Clear orange with a small light beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet honey, fruity, and a light bitterness. Old Stock is much better.
