North Coast Brewing’s Class of ’88 Barleywine is a collaboration with Rogue Ales and Deschutes Brewery to celebrate their shared 25th anniversary of brewing craft ales. The three breweries teamed up at all three locations to create their own distinctive versions of a barleywine ale based on the original guidelines in Fred Eckhardt’s The Essentials of Beer Style. The results are three delicious variations on a theme and a strong sense of partnership and camaraderie among the brewers and breweries. The brewers are Pat Broderick and Ken Kelley from North Coast, John C. Maier from Rogue and Cam O’Connor from Deschutes.

(Bottle) Amber colour, slightly hazy, with frothy off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with caramel, dried apricots, orange peel, pink grapefruit and some resin. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of caramel, grapefruit, dried apricots, orange peel, candy sugar, resin and a balanced citric, resiny bitterness in the finish. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Strong and quite hoppy, still in good balance and really tasty. Very nice.

Pours nice deep orange, some quite decent beige foam on top. Nose is amazing, soft and fruity. Light alcohol kick, mainly figs, raisins in taste. Hop marmalade here too. Tastes hoppy, good balance and has a big warming presence. Nicely coming together.

Bright amber color. Peach cobbler, cherries with good citrus character. Low carbonation, oranges, brandy, cherries and peach cobbler but body is a bit thin. Fairly hoppy. Aged well but still not fantastic.

Bottle split at CBC Islo, thanks to me Kenny, 07/07/16. Rich amber to orange with a well appointed off white head. Nose is fruit cake, light spice, caramel, almond croissant, rich dark fruit vibes. Taste comprises caramel melt, sweet malts, bitter orange, faint tropical fruit esters, light candied fruits. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little warming alcohol. Decent well balanced BW.

Bottle shared at Craft Beer Co Islington - many thanks to Mitchy Mitch. Pours clear orange-gold with a creamy, white head. The nose holds toasted bread, orange rind, dry caramel, some toasted pine. Medium to big sweet flavour with hearty malts, more caramel and pine, some rind. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish, with notes of ripe citrus, subtle oily pine, lots of lightly toasted bread. Quite good stuff.

Big Bottleshare at Craft Islington. Hazy amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry, modest fine carbonation. Soft malts. modestly sweet. Spice. Alcohol spice. Tired dried fruits. Mild floralness. Light dry finish. It’s not bad but it’s one of those big beers that doesn’t seem to have aged that well. The punch is there but the flavours are a little tired.
