Scotch Ale or "Wee Heavy," was included in this series to pay tribute to the hearty Scots who have enjoyed rich, full ales for centuries. This ale was traditionally made with malt dried in peat-fired ovens. This leaves a slightly smoky flavor adding to the malt character. "Wee Heavy" is made with fine Two Row barley and a portion of smoked malt, English hops, pure Moab water and Scottish yeast. It is aged in French oak and bottle conditioned. "Wee Heavy" is a brown-ruby rich color and has a sweet malt character. The Scotch Ale will pair with nachos, baked potato skins, smoked salmon salad or wrap, prime rib dinner and chicken and cheese enchiladas. Store upright and serve at 55 degrees F to room temperature. Use wide mouth glassware. Hand-crafted 100% pure ale. This full-bodied ale is bottled in limited amounts right here at the Moab Brewery. We brew and hand-bottle only 2000 bottles per year.

Bottle from the brewery.
A: hazy brown, small, foamy, tan head.
A: liquorice, band-aid, old walnut, pear.
T: sweetish pear, liquorice, bitter herbs, old bread.
F: herbal hops, bitter medicinal clove & liquorice.
P: medium body, oily texture, average carbonation.
Lacks malty smooth- & sweetness; overall too medicinal & harshly bitter. Bad batch perhaps?

bomber - Pours amber with a two finger head. It smells of smoked and caramel malt. The flavor is sweet with a pleasant smokiness, more smoke than most Scotch ales I’ve had, caramel, and maybe some dark fruit. It’s full bodied and very good.

Expensive as all hell 1 liter swing top, picked up at Moab, pours with a clear copper body that supports a weak off white head of foam. The aroma offers up caramel malts, thin fig notes and a bit of a peat like plastic sensation. The taste comes across better than the nose as the peat in the nose was cutting against the other notes. In the flavor I get sweet malts, some caramel like malts, prunes, figs and then the peat note bringing up the rear off in the background. The more I drink this the more I like it.

0.5 L bottle. Dark, translucent orangish-brown color, with a huge, frothy, beige head. The aroma is molasses, semi-sweet chocolate, coriander, bitter orange, and some light smoke and peat. Very sweet flavor, with a little grainy bitterness in the aftertaste. Just a touch of boozy warming. Heavy body, sticky, and chalky. This is a big malt-bomb, but nice, complex aroma and a big, thick palate.

Rated this last night on paper. Another big bottle (1 qt. 0.815 oz, to be exact) shared with brenn79, this one a swingtop. Aroma is a little peaty, malty, biscuity. Pours cloudy orange with a large off-white lacy head with great retention. Taste is sweet and a little tart; lightly smoky with some fruity esters. Leaves a nice lingering caramelly aftertaste. Body could be fuller, carbonation is soft. It’s pretty good but I wish it was more smoky. This beer got a lot better as it warmed up. The caramel became more prounounced and yummy.
